Job Summary: The University of Alabama System Office in Tuscaloosa is currently receiving applications for the position of System Fellow, an undergraduate student position, reporting to the Special Assistant to the Chancellor.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be enrolled in a UA System Campus undergraduate degree program at UA, UAB or UAH.
Must be registered for at least six (6) credit hours during Fall/Spring semesters.
Must be available to work at least 15 hours per week.
Ability to prioritize duties in a manner that allows for flexibility in responding to changing demands
Initiative to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner and provide appropriate status updates
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING
Attending monthly meetings with the Special Assistant to the Chancellor to reflect on student life, campus culture, core principles, and leadership decisions
Organizing Board materials and taking part in three Board meetings per year
Assisting with special projects pertaining to Board documents, memorandums, logistics, current events, etc.
Submitting semesterly reflections on your experience as a System Fellow
Covering the front desk during lunch hours and other times as requested
Answering a multi-line phone system
Copying, scanning, filing, and mailing documents
Setting up and breaking down conference rooms for meetings and events
Distributing packages and mail
Taking inventory of and stocking supplies
Making deliveries and handling courier assignments in Tuscaloosa
Exhibiting a professional attitude with all staff, visitors, and other student assistants
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE Monday - Friday, hours vary by semester depending on office needs.

The project goal is to identify candidate warm-water species of attached filamentous algae strains from selected watersheds in the southeastern U.S. states, especially Alabama and Georgia, and investigate their response to temperature, flow rate, and nutrient concentration in unialgal and mixed cultures in the laboratory. The research position is funded by a U.S. Department of Energy funding award focused on upscaling of filamentous algae cultivation for biomass production in regional climate conditions. Opportunities exist for the candidate to design and implement their own research in algae collection and in experiments related to filamentous algae culturing at various scales and in controlled environmental conditions. Contributions to grant proposal and research manuscript writing is expected and encouraged.

**Minimum Qualifications**

Dr. Juli Bai is currently a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Houston (UTHealth Houston). The research team is dedicated to exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying immune regulation and metabolism in conditions such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver (MAFL), steatohepatitis (MASH), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In recent years, their findings have been published in leading journals such as Nature Metabolism, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Nature Communications, PNAS, and JCI Insight. Dr. Bai's innovative research in immune metabolism has earned the prestigious Innovative Basic Science Award from the American Diabetes Association, as well as fundings from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other agencies.
The research of Dr. Bai's lab is dedicated to unraveling novel mechanisms underlying the intricate interplay between immune regulation and metabolic diseases. Particularly, our current research is focused on the mitochondrial dysfunction, ER stress, lipid metabolism, secreted proteins, metabolites, immune receptor and cGAS-STING innate immune signaling in the progression of these metabolic disease, with a special focus on liver metabolic dysfunction including MASH and HCC. By utilizing various tissue-specific transgenic and knockout mouse models and applying cutting-edge strategies such as molecular and cell biology, single-cell sequencing, live-cell confocal microscopy, live-animal two-photon microscopy, and multi-omics approaches, Dr. Bai's lab aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the etiology of metabolic diseases, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets. The team's work also explores the potential of translational research, particularly with small molecules and metabolites related to MASH and HCC.

About the Team:
Located in Birmingham, Alabama, is the People Inc. Food Studios, a state-of-the-art facility featuring 28 test kitchens, 13 photo studios, a prop and styling studio, an outdoor grill/BBQ station, and an expansive showcase kitchen and tasting room for demonstrations and events. Powered by a talented team of test kitchen professionals, stylists, and photographers, the People Inc. Responsibilities will Include:
● Deliver gear and help set up and break down sets
● Input metadata/help with deliverables to brands
● Assist photographers in-studio, working closely with the equipment manager, to make sure all photographer needs are met
● Help the equipment manager maintain the equipment and ensure the studio is kept tidy and organized
● Ensure freelance photographers have everything they need to be successful in the studio, including communicating shoot needs, equipment, and final asset delivery
