Funded by the National Cancer Institute (T32CA240172), the multidisciplinary training program in prostate cancer at Cedars-Sinai Cancer provides exceptionally motivated postdoctoral fellows with scientific knowledge, research training, and professional skills of translational prostate cancer research. The goal of the program is to provide innovative curriculum and mentored research that prepares an elite group of highly motivated fellows to become successful, independent researchers in cancer biology. As a Research Fellow you will work independently and in close cooperation/consultation with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientist(s). Daily tasks will include complex and routine laboratory procedures throughout the training period in prostate cancer research. May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols, and responsible for the analysis and interpretation of data. May aid in the preparation of grant proposals. The treatment philosophy at SPS is to provide psychotherapeutic and consultation support services for students to enhance their academic functioning and maximize their total learning and growth experience at LMU. This emphasis is consistent with the mission of the University, the resources available to Student Psychological Services, the population being served, and the availability of mental health services in the community. Our training approach to treatment is integrative and promotes the use of interventions that are based on empirically supported treatments. We encourage Residents to think broadly about their clinical work and to draw from knowledge in developmental psychology, psychopathology, neuropsychology, multi-cultural psychology, learning theory, family systems, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, group psychotherapy and humanistic approaches Clinical training involves the evaluation, treatment, and referral of our undergraduate and graduate students. There are extensive opportunities to work with both male and female late adolescents and young adults, and, to a lesser extent, with adults of other ages. There are rich opportunities to treat a very diverse clientele in terms of ethnicity, gender, culture, and socioeconomic background. The clientele presents with a wide range of problems including adjustment difficulties, relationship concerns, major affective disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, and often present in psychological crisis. The clinical caseload is generally 16-20 hours per week and includes intake/assessment, crisis management, and individual and group psychotherapy. It is expected that the trainees take advantage of the many opportunities to participate in campus outreach and education. Residents are also responsible for supervising a group of undergraduate peer educators. The remaining hours are spent in supervision, outreach, case consultation, seminars, and chart documentation. Requisite Qualifications * A Doctorate degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA- accredited program by the time of hire. * Completion of a pre-doctoral internship that, at a minimum, meets APPIC standards. * Counseling experience in a university setting preferred. * Knowledge and experience working with college age developmental issues and more severe psychological disturbances. * Evidence of sensitivity and understanding of the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, religious, ethnic and academic backgrounds of college students. * Demonstrated experience providing outreach and consultation. The ideal candidate will want to collaborate in redesigning our Department curriculum and be able to contribute to the College's interdisciplinary programs in Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Latinx Studies, and/or African American studies, and/or the Art department's Design major track. The goal of Whittier's Postdoctoral Fellowship program is to move fellows into tenure-track lines by the time they have completed their fellowship. The Rustin-Mellon Fellow will therefore be eligible for a tenure-track appointment by the end of this three-year Mellon-funded postdoctoral fellowship (appointment is dependent a successful performance review). In the first three years, the Fellow's responsibilities will include teaching, research, and participating in the campus's new Mellon-funded Poet StoryLab (2023-2026). This project will investigate the historical evolution of a “brown” identity in the US, paying close attention to the way intersectional experiences related to gender and sexual orientation impact the lived experience of racialized bodies in our current cultural and political climate. The Fellow will teach two small classes of 15-20 undergraduate students per year on topics relevant to these themes. Additionally, the Fellow will join the faculty team responsible for grant-funded programmatic activities and assist particularly in the areas of coordinating student interns and community outreach.
