New Scholarship on the US South: a Wilson Library Fellows Symposium
This fall the Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will hold a capstone multidisciplinary symposium: New Scholarship on the US South: a Wilson Library Fellows Symposium. Focused on emerging trends in scholarship of the American South, the symposium explores the cross-disciplinary currents in historical research created with support of the Wilson Library Southern Studies Doctoral Fellowship program at Wilson Special Collections Library.
We invite past fellows to submit a proposal for a paper (2,500 to 3,000 words) presenting recent research and intellectual work. Papers will be organized into panels that reflect innovative and thematic approaches to Southern Studies, facilitated by invited discussants.
The symposium will be held on-site in Wilson Special Collections Library on November 7-8, 2023, immediately prior to the Southern Historical Association's annual meeting in Charlotte, NC. On the evening of November 7, an opening address will be delivered. On November 8, fellows will present their scholarship.
Fellows who are selected to present will be awarded a stipend to support travel and participation costs.
A limited number of virtual presentations will be considered for international participants.
Paper proposals are due by midnight on June 15 and should be submitted electronically via Interfolio. Proposals should be no longer than 500 words in length and provide reviewers with a clear idea of their:

Voice
Collaborate in patient care with our Voice and Swallowing Center laryngologists and other physician referrals.
Perform rigid and/or flexible video laryngostroboscopy to assess laryngeal function and biomechanics.
Evaluate patients via use of acoustic, phonatory aerodynamic, and/or perceptual measurements for differential diagnosis and to formulate recommendations/plan of care.
Offer individualized voice therapy treatment programs through a variety of approaches.
Educate patients on issues regarding vocal health and hygiene, potentially abusive vocal behaviors, irritable larynx syndrome, chronic cough/throat clearing, and management of reflux through dietary and behavioral modifications.
Provide therapy pre- and post- laryngeal surgery to optimize vocal outcome and reduce the risk of re-injury.
Educate patients how to independently resolve episodic dyspnea related to inducible laryngeal obstruction through laryngeal control/respiratory retraining exercises, postural adjustment and optimization of typical respiratory patterns during speech and at rest.
Dysphagia (adult)
Perform differential diagnosis of swallowing disorders via clinical and instrumental assessment using Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBS) and/or Flexible Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES).
Identify treatment options for dysphagia, including alternative means of nutrition (PEG or NG), diet modifications (thin/nectar/honey-thickened liquid), postural techniques, and exercise-based swallowing therapy.
Provide evidence-based dysphagia rehabilitation utilizing sEMG, lingual manometry, respiratory muscle training, and pharyngeal strengthening exercises
Head & Neck Cancer Dysphagia
Perform pre and post swallowing evaluations via FEES or MBS before patients begin radiation and/or undergo surgical resection of the head and neck.
Assess and train patients on optimal adaptive feeding techniques such as lavage feeding, modified syringe feeding, glossectomy techniques, and all other compensatory strategies for oral and pharyngeal deficits post-surgery.
Head & Neck Cancer Communication
Provide therapeutic intervention for intelligibility in the post-operative patient when indicated, utilizing compensatory strategies for intelligibility and/or compensatory techniques and exercises for lingual/labial/facial strength, range of motion, and articulatory competence.
Manage total laryngectomy patients. Includes thorough pre-operative education on upcoming changes regarding anatomy and communication between inpatient and outpatient providers.
Train patients on use of electrolarynx, HME systems, stoma support, and other stoma care products.
Maintain a working knowledge of pertinent insurance coverage and assist patients and family members with ordering/obtaining necessary stoma care/cover supplies.
Manage tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP) program.
Provide pre-op education regarding purpose, use, cleaning, and maintenance of the TEP.
Troubleshoot both chronic and urgent TEP issues, such as leaking, changes in voicing, dislodgement, loss of the prosthesis, or tissue changes.
Fit patients for hands-free devices and provide all education and training.

The project entails the rational expansion of the GSK Published Kinase Inhibitor Set (PKIS) to enrich the current collection of de-orphanized human protein kinases and unique chemical probes for thus kinase library. Working with researchers at SGC-UNC as well as SGC collaborators worldwide, the successful candidate will develop comprehensive chemical genomics database of human protein kinases and their inhibitors, develop new scheme for automated detection of kinase (subfamiliy)-specific chemotypes, and develop predictive understanding of structure-activity and structure-selectivity relationships for kinase inhibitors to identify selective kinase-specific putative probe compounds. The ultimate objective of this computational project is to prioritize new compounds for experimental testing. This postdoctoral fellow position will be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes biologists, chemists, and data scientists. The ideal candidate will have significant expertise in bioinformatics and cheminformatics, working knowledge of multivariate statistical and data mining techniques, and strong programming skills. Experience with developing and maintaining large databases is a plus.

Position Summary
The University of North Carolina School of Law is proud to announce a prestigious fellowship opportunity with its nationally recognized Supreme Court Program, beginning in Fall 2026. This program is one of only a handful of opportunities at American law schools for law students to be directly involvement in litigation before the United States Supreme Court.
Since its inception, the UNC Supreme Court Program has cultivated a reputation for excellence in appellate advocacy. Students engage deeply in the mechanics of Supreme Court litigation, including identifying cert-worthy cases, drafting petitions for certiorari, oppositions to certiorari, amicus briefs, and merits briefs. The Program consistently files more than ten briefs per Term, and since 2019, has submitted over 30 briefs to the Court, including a successful merits brief in McElrath v. Georgia, 601 U.S. 87 (2024). McElrath was argued by Program Co-Director Richard Simpson, resulting in a 9-0 victory.
The Fellow will serve as counsel in active Supreme Court litigation and will co-teach the Supreme Court Program course, providing mentorship and supervision to students engaged in real-world appellate practice. The fellowship includes significant litigation responsibilities including drafting and revising court filings, client recruitment, and strategic case development. In performing these tasks, the Fellow will work with Richard Simpson and may serve as counsel of record in one or more cases, contingent on Supreme Court Bar membership.
This is a two-year fellowship, with an initial appointment for one year, and a strong expectation of renewal. The fellowship is designed to support both academic career preparation and professional development. Fellows interested in pursuing a career in legal academia will receive structured mentorship, dedicated time for research and writing, and support in preparing for the academic job market. Educational Goals:
Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will independently plan and safely execute basic and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The fellow will be sensitive to pain management and independently anticipate and manage potential post-procedural complications. Ideally, the fellow will begin to develop novel diagnostic or therapeutic procedures and techniques.
The fellow will function at a high clinical level in terms of productivity and knowledge level with respect to musculoskeletal imaging. The fellow should know basic biomechanics and injury mechanisms for musculoskeletal trauma. The fellow should recognize detailed anatomy on cross- sectional imaging. The fellow should provide feedback to technical staff members regarding image acquisition in complex cases.
The fellow should serve as a teacher and mentor for junior learners. The fellow should be able to teach residents to identify subtle findings and develop an approach to image analysis across multiple musculoskeletal imaging modalities. The fellow should know basic bone physiology and recognize drug- and treatment-induced changes in bone. The fellow should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of orthopedic procedures and their radiographic, CT, US, or MR
appearance. The fellow will be well equipped to pursue a career in academic medicine. During the fellowship, the fellow will present at a national or international meeting. This presentation will provide the fellow with an opportunity to advance the knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions through a research project and/or an opportunity to teach peers at a national level through an educational exhibit.

The ultimate objective of this computational project is to prioritize new compounds for experimental testing. Voice
* Collaborate in patient care with our Voice and Swallowing Center laryngologists and other physician referrals.
* Perform rigid and/or flexible video laryngostroboscopy to assess laryngeal function and biomechanics.
* Evaluate patients via use of acoustic, phonatory aerodynamic, and/or perceptual measurements for differential diagnosis and to formulate recommendations/plan of care.
* Offer individualized voice therapy treatment programs through a variety of approaches.
* Educate patients on issues regarding vocal health and hygiene, potentially abusive vocal behaviors, irritable larynx syndrome, chronic cough/throat clearing, and management of reflux through dietary and behavioral modifications.
* Provide therapy pre- and post- laryngeal surgery to optimize vocal outcome and reduce the risk of re-injury.
* Educate patients how to independently resolve episodic dyspnea related to inducible laryngeal obstruction through laryngeal control/respiratory retraining exercises, postural adjustment and optimization of typical respiratory patterns during speech and at rest.
Dysphagia (adult)
* Perform differential diagnosis of swallowing disorders via clinical and instrumental assessment using Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBS) and/or Flexible Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES).
* Identify treatment options for dysphagia, including alternative means of nutrition (PEG or NG), diet modifications (thin/nectar/honey-thickened liquid), postural techniques, and exercise-based swallowing therapy.
* Provide evidence-based dysphagia rehabilitation utilizing sEMG, lingual manometry, respiratory muscle training, and pharyngeal strengthening exercises
Head & Neck Cancer Dysphagia
* Perform pre and post swallowing evaluations via FEES or MBS before patients begin radiation and/or undergo surgical resection of the head and neck.
* Assess and train patients on optimal adaptive feeding techniques such as lavage feeding, modified syringe feeding, glossectomy techniques, and all other compensatory strategies for oral and pharyngeal deficits post-surgery.
Head & Neck Cancer Communication
* Provide therapeutic intervention for intelligibility in the post-operative patient when indicated, utilizing compensatory strategies for intelligibility and/or compensatory techniques and exercises for lingual/labial/facial strength, range of motion, and articulatory competence.
* Manage total laryngectomy patients. Includes thorough pre-operative education on upcoming changes regarding anatomy and communication between inpatient and outpatient providers.
* Train patients on use of electrolarynx, HME systems, stoma support, and other stoma care products.
* Maintain a working knowledge of pertinent insurance coverage and assist patients and family members with ordering/obtaining necessary stoma care/cover supplies.
* Manage tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP) program.
* Provide pre-op education regarding purpose, use, cleaning, and maintenance of the TEP.
* Troubleshoot both chronic and urgent TEP issues, such as leaking, changes in voicing, dislodgement, loss of the prosthesis, or tissue changes.
* Fit patients for hands-free devices and provide all education and training.

While the specific skill sets are somewhat flexible, direct experience with how to isolate, measure, and/or determine the structures of secondary metabolites with NMR and/or mass spectrometry is a requirement. In addition, direct experience with the growth and propagation of fungi is highly desirable.
Minimum Qualifications

Job Summary: Provides direct health services to patients of all age groups primarily under the supervision of a licensed physician and secondarily under advanced practice providers during a 1 year didactic and clinical fellowship program.

Essential Functions:
1. Performs accurate initial and periodic medical history, physical examinations and daily assessments via rounds, noting patient's condition and needs.
2. Integrates history and physical findings with clinical knowledge to develop appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans in collaboration with the supervising physician, documenting such plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
3. Identifies abnormal findings within an appropriate time-frame and initiates the appropriate intervention.
4. Performs a wide range of medical and/or surgical procedures appropriate to the department to which the fellow is assigned, under physician supervision.
5. Performs follow-up care, monitors progress, and communicates progress as necessary with the attending physician.
6. Provides counseling to patients and significant others related to medical condition.
7. Writes appropriate prescriptions and administers the appropriate medications. Prescribes therapies as appropriate.
8. Orders and interprets daily laboratory and radiology examinations.
9. Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner on the patient's electronic medical record, utilizing hospital approved abbreviations.
10. Prepares appropriate discharge documentation, including specific medical instructions, patient education, referral and follow up as pertinent to the department for which the fellow is assigned.
11. Provides health care management, functioning within the policies and procedures, the guidelines of both the Nursing Practice Act and the Medical Practice Act and other regulatory agencies.
Physical Requirements: Requires travel between the acute care facility and the ambulatory clinics. Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support weight of 75 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment and supplies. Must possess an intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch and finger dexterity. Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
Education, Experiences and Qualifications:
Nurse Practitioner: Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner educational program with a Master's Degree required. Licensed by the North Carolina Board of Nursing to practice as a nurse practitioner required.
Physician Assistant: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program with a minimum of a Master's degree required. Physician Assistants must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and Licensed by the State of North Carolina Medical Board.

This position is expected to perform research in the area of alcohol-related organ injury. The research projects aim at understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of alcohol-induced pathogenesis at the gut-liver axis and exploring preventive and/or therapeutic interventions. Data generated from the projects will be used to support external funding applications.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in the field of Biological Sciences.Experienced in cellular and molecular biology; Experienced in using graphics and statistical software to analyze and present data.And a record of research productivity in peer-reviewed journals and/or scientific meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in handling mouse models.Strong written and oral communication skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
