About the Role
We're looking for an early-career journalist to fill a paid, entry-level position as a Newsroom Fellow. The journalist will work alongside the US politics team, helping build, produce, and publish our briefings. Orientation Month (Remote):
In May, fellows work remotely 5-10 hours weekly to prepare for their summer residency at NBR's Washington, DC office. This foundational period introduces fellows to NBR's mission, research agenda, and organizational culture. Fellows connect with their supervisors and mentors, set professional goals, and participate in virtual NBR events. Through structured training sessions, fellows learn about the role of think tanks in U.S. policymaking and begin developing skills essential for policy research. This preparation ensures fellows maximize their in-person experience and hit the ground running in June.
Team Assignment (In Person):
From June, fellows will work primarily with one of the existing program teams at NBR, including teams focused on political and security affairs and technology and geoeconomic affairs. Team assignments will be based on NBR team needs, although candidates' backgrounds and preferences will be taken into consideration.
Throughout the four-month program, fellows will gain experience in project management, research, writing, and editing in order to build skills for future careers in policy. Fellows will assist with project activities, publications support, database administration, event planning, and general office support. The Department focuses on areas shaping global technology and commercial competition and their role in national security-economic policies related to trade, investment, intellectual property, and innovation; advanced and strategic technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, digital, quantum, and cybersecurity; energy security and climate, as well as economic relations with China and with partners. Position Overview The Senior Fellow will serve as the senior analyst within the EST front office, working directly with the President of the Economic Security and Technology Department on high-priority research initiatives that further EST and enterprise-wide impact goals. The Team:
The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) works to strengthen the efforts of the ACLU at the federal, state, and local levels of government. The department harnesses the political power that comes from having more than eight million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. By organizing grassroots lobbying and issue campaigns using modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to continue to achieve change as profound in the legislative, administrative and electoral arenas as it accomplishes through the courts. The Democracy and Technology Policy & Government Affairs team is made up of eight members, including seven attorneys, who work with Congress, state legislatures, regulatory agencies and others to strengthen and protect rights to voting, free speech, and privacy; to advance racial justice; and to ensure that emerging technologies (in artificial intelligence, algorithmic decision-making, and surveillance) are not used to deny rights or discriminate.
What You'll Do:
The intern will work on legal and policy research and writing-related projects centered on voting, racial justice, free speech, technology policy, or democracy reform. They will assist members of our team with researching and analyzing legislation, elected officials, coalition partners, and relevant developments in the political and advocacy landscapes on the state and federal levels. They will help prepare advocacy and public education materials, correspondence, and reports as needed. They will also support our team's efforts to do congressional outreach through the form of briefings, meetings on Capitol Hill, and letters.
Your Day to Day
