The Fermentation Engineer will be responsible for development and optimization of fermentation processes for production of biocatalysts.
Core Responsibilities:
Development of new and optimization of existing industrial enzyme fermentation, DSP and formulation processes.Plan and execute enzyme fermentation experimental design (Lab, pilot & industrial scale) ensuring safety, effectiveness and efficiency.Collect, analyze and interpret experimental (Lab, pilot & industrial scale), and actual production data.Communicate with key stakeholders in R&D, engineering, manufacturing, CROs and CMOs. Collaborate with biochemistry and molecular biology team on enzyme of interest characteristics and peculiarities to adapt the most effective and efficient fermentation, DSP and formulation strategy.Involve in manufacturing infrastructure development and upgrade, including unit operation design, in-line process monitoring & automation, data management systems.Collaborate in troubleshooting and lead continuous improvement and new technology implementation initiatives at industrial scale fermentation facilities.Conduct enzyme fermentation experiments safely and effectively against the project goals with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data. Record and document all stages of R&D work, operate lab information & knowledge management system (ELN etc.).Prepare technical, experimental reports, techno-economic feasibility assessments for communicating work outcomes and future recommendations. Ensure Compliance with laws and internal policies.Other assigned duties and responsibilities.

Qualified candidates will have:
Min. MSc degree (PhD preferrable) in biotechnology, biochemical engineering or related field with 3+ years working experience as Fermentation Engineer or equivalent role Hands-on experience with enzyme production using benchtop fermenters, , microbiological techniques, downstream processes, and statistical tools.Experience with scale-up is a plus.Applied knowledge in microbial physiology, chemistry, enzymology, physics, statistics, fermenter / bioreactor design, process data analytics, control and automation.Understanding of modern molecular biology, strain and enzyme engineering.

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe's growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.

To realize our dream of building a next-generation organism company, each of these organisms needs to be deployed to customers. We are seeking a Senior Fermentation Engineer who is excited to tackle the ambitious challenge of transitioning multiple organisms, with a focus on various filamentous fungi, from microtiter plates, to bench-scale fermentation through scale up and commercial scale manufacturing of ingredients with our customers.

With your strong passion for microbial fermentation and process development, you'll work hand-in-hand with Ginkgo's organism engineers to verify that Ginkgo organisms perform to spec for customers. Plus, you'll lead the transition of those bioprocesses to customers and/or third party contract manufacturers.

JOB SUMMARY and KEY OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this position is to assist production in meeting all safety, quality, delivery and cost goals set by VBC Management. The individual will have knowledge of fermentation science and biochemical engineering principles, theory and practice with special focus on microbial fermentation operations in an industrial setting or a strong interest in acquiring such skills. The Fermentation Engineer will also act as mentor and leader to Production Specialists and Interns.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

+ Support and comply with all VBC safety and environmental training policies and programs

+ Track and trend yield and quality data for each fermentation batch for all products to identify and eliminate special cause variation and recommend continuous improvement projects

+ Chart, track and analyze other production data to recommend and implement lean manufacturing projects

+ Identify, develop and implement creative practical solutions to improve the economics of the fermentation, recovery and formulation processes

+ Write, update and maintain production master batch records, work instructions and other standard operating procedures and training manuals

+ Proactively identify problems and develop solutions to improve manufacturing operations and safety

+ Review and adjust cost standards/bill of materials

+ Assist production with troubleshooting, drive root cause analysis investigations and implement fail safe solutions as corrective/preventive actions (CAPA)

+ Participate in cost-saving initiatives, and maintain or improve product quality and yield

+ Establish procedures to ensure efficient operation and maintenance of commercial scale fermenters and all related recovery and formulation equipment

+ Provide fermentation, recovery and formulation support to production

+ Advice and train plant operators, production specialists and supervisors

+ Foster a continuous process improvement environment and help implement new technologies

+ Sponsor Capital investments/technical changes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS and EDUCATION

+ BS in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, biology, or other related fields is required, M.S. or Ph.D. preferred

+ Hands-on experience with industrial scale microbial fermentation processes or a strong interest in developing such skills is desired

+ Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

+ Must be able to work independently and as a part of an interdisciplinary, diverse team

+ Good working knowledge of chemical and biochemical process unit operations is a plus

+ Excellent computer skills are desired

+ Working knowledge and understanding of process control and automation is a plus

+ Industrial scale hands-on plant experience with process optimization and Six Sigma experience is a plus

+ Must have flexibility to work some limited off-shift and weekend hours in order to support all production shifts when needed
