Job Description
The Optical Technician, will assist with the manufacturing and testing of various fiber optic and electrical components within a manufacturing environment. Also, able to perform various other duties and activities as assigned by the supervisor or manager within the physical constraints of the job.
This can be an entry level position for which we provide training

QUALITY

OPERATIONS

Maintains effective communications with all key stakeholders both internal and where appropriate external Supervisors & Managers should clearly communicate expectations, roles and responsibilities to their reports

What We Need From You (Our Requirements):

  • 2-4 years of related experience required

  • Be able to climb utility poles and work out of an aerial lift devise

  • Be able to stand, walk, and work on uneven ground for the full workday

We are seeking a Fiber Optic Technician to perform all duties related to fiber splicing, termination, restoration, and testing in each of our markets. Training will be provided in all areas to ensure the technician has all the skills to provide a superior service to our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Splice and repair fiber optic cables using single and mass fusion equipment.
  • Terminate fiber with pig tails or Unicam components.
  • Test fiber using Optical Time Domain (OTDR) or power meter and light source, testing with a light identifier.
  • Install required splice capsules and hardware with attention to detail and workmanship.
  • Physically install Network devices and act as smart-hands for Netops team to turn up and troubleshoot circuits.
  • Maintain existing plant without causing signal failure interruptions.
  • Maintain test documentation.
  • Maintain accurate as-built splicing documentation.
  • Assist with fiber design solutions via documentation on hand or real-time on-site information.
  • Maintain project tracking information (production sheets, time sheets, and customer required paperwork).
  • Maintain testing, splice equipment, trailers, and vehicles.
  • Complete certification testing of fiber optic systems as required.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • OTN cabinet maintenance as required.
  • Various other duties as assigned by Director of Astrea Engineering.

Who are we looking for?

  • Previous fiber splicing experience required.
  • 3-5 years fiber splicing experience preferred.
  • Proficient with MS Office and other Web-based applications.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Highly independent, self-starter, responsible and attentive to detail.
  • Mechanically inclined.
  • Proficient in the use of all test and splicing equipment.
  • Understand construction prints and splice schematics.
  • Ability to work aloft up to 50’ in a bucket truck, ladder, and/or climb utility poles.
  • Ability to take initiative and handle various tasks simultaneously while working efficiently, effectively, and independently under minimal supervision.
  • Consistently demonstrate the values of the company through all personal acts and lead others to conform to these behaviors.

Shift is full-time, Monday – Friday, between the hours of 7:00 am – 5:00 pm CST but must be willing to work outside of normal business hours as required.

Additional Information

  • Up to 40% overnight travel throughout Wisconsin may be required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record as well as completion of DOT physical.
  • Able and willing to work outdoors and in inclement weather conditions.
  • Able and willing to participate in 24/7 emergency restoration program, which includes call out pay and hourly premium when deployed.
