5 Common Career Paths For a Field Service Technician

Service Manager

Service managers are employees who oversee the departments related to providing services to customers. They ensure that service delivery agreements are met by employees in the department. Service managers meet with stakeholders to set service delivery metrics and department goals. They then create strategies to reach these metrics and goals. They are responsible for cascading such goals and metrics to their employees and ensuring that the employees understand what they need to do. Service managers should have a deep understanding and appreciation of the company and its business so that they can create strategies that are in line with the company's identity. They should also be familiar with the customer profiles of the company. Service managers are also responsible for creating department reports and sharing these with stakeholders.

Systems Administrator

Systems administrators are employees who oversee information technology infrastructures in the office. They are skilled information technology professionals who are knowledgeable about the company's network systems and other technology-related infrastructures. They are responsible for installing, configuring, or updating network systems, software, and hardware. They also monitor the different systems and troubleshoot any issues that users may encounter. Systems administrators manage the access of users, ensure the security of the network, and address any challenges that users may have. They conduct repairs and routine maintenance to ensure that the systems in place are in the best shape.

Systems Engineer

Systems engineers are responsible for creating and overseeing systems related to the overall operations of the organization. They are in charge of assessing the organization's needs in terms of systems and creating plans to address these needs. These systems are usually related to the production or manufacturing of company products. Systems engineers create end-to-end processes that ensure efficiency and effectiveness. They make sure that the processes they put in place adhere to safety and security policies and guidelines. They also do routine checks and continuously find ways to further improve production and other systems.

Team Leader

Team leaders are responsible for managing a team for a specific project or work component. They primarily guide the team members and ensure that they are still working towards the set goals. Team leaders create strategies to reach goals, cascade the goals and strategies to team members, assign tasks, conduct periodic check-ups on the roadmap towards the goals, foster an engaging work environment, motivate and coach team members, monitor team performance, evaluate the strategies and come up with mitigating plans as needed. They are also responsible for reporting the team's progress to higher management.

Technical Support Engineer

A technical support engineer is responsible for responding to customer issues, providing immediate resolutions to their system issues through remote assistance. Technical support engineers must have strong knowledge of software and hardware applications to diagnose system defects and process troubleshooting. They also assist customers with the installation of programs and updates to improve system performance, escalating high-level concerns to appropriate internal technology teams. A technical support engineer must have strong command with technical systems, as well as excellent communication and time-management skills to understand clients' issues while documenting procedures.

Field Service Technician FAQs

Is a field tech a good job?

Yes, a field tech is a good job. It's an ideal position for people who like working with tech, but don't like being tied to an office chair.

A person can have a very satisfying career as a field tech if they enjoy diversity within their work, think on their feet and quickly resolve problems, and appreciate the position's variability and "on-call" nature.

Is field service technician a good job?

Yes, field service technician is a good job. Whether it is a good job for you depends on your individual strengths and expectations for your career path. For example, a career as a field service technician is vanishingly unlikely to provide a six-figure salary.

If this is a necessity for you, a career as a field service technician may not be the right path. If you struggle to be productive in a less structured work environment, again, you may not find the career of a field service technician all that fulfilling.

However, if you thrive on a flexible schedule, enjoy fixing things, have decent technical skills, and would be comfortable earning between $40,000 per year and $70,000 per year, a career as a field service technician may be perfect for you.

Field service technicians must be comfortable dealing with customers, and as such, must have good interpersonal communication skills. They may also be expected to work on an unconventional or inconsistent schedule.

These skill sets speak to the importance of improvisational ability and adaptability in the field service technician profession.

Additionally, for individuals with little higher education, or little interest in pursuing higher education, a career as a field service technician may be just the opportunity to play to their strengths.
