Field test engineer job description

Field Test Engineer to lead the build & operation of demo/engineering/ field test vehicles with advanced ePowertrains Interfacing with end-customers, OEMs, local engineering, and central engineering.

Engineering lab coordination for the tear-down, evaluation, assembly, and function-testing of our ePowertrain products.

Perform test engineering and related analysis as required to support internal and external customers. Document lab and field test plans and publish test reports for the development and validation of current and new ePowertrain products. Work with test personnel to execute plans.

Design, setup, configure, and operate test setups, fixtures, and instrumentation as required by test plans, test standards, and customer instructions.

Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of issues in ePowertrains. Ensure completion of all 8-Ds for testing-development issues.

Able to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams. Can write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.

Preparation of work-instructions for all aspects of Engineering Test Trucks, ePowertrain evaluations, and Lab Testing activities.

Provide technical support to the Field Organization, Service Organization, Procurement Organization, Sales and Marketing Organization, Original Equipment Manufacturers, and vendors.

Work with ZF engineering teams (program management, design, control and resident) and departments within global R&D.

Plans multiple projects simultaneously. Estimates, tracks & completes project on time and within budget. Create tasks and timelines required to complete assignments
Essential Skills and Experience:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering 5-6 years of experience within powertrain engineering. Customer interface experience. Either have (or have the ability to obtain) CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Excellent English language competency
Capable of managing a variety of engineering projects, prepare formal presentations, and maintain project document files. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management Working knowledge of measurement techniques, hydraulics, and vehicle testing techniques. Familiarity with data acquisition systems, data analysis, and data processing Strong Functional/Product Knowledge, ability to train others Proficient with Microsoft Office software Ability/willingness to travel both domestically and internationally (up to 25%) Preferred Skills and Experience:
Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. 3+ years of experience with ePowertrain technology (Axle Electric, Central Electric, Hybrid). 3+ years of experience in N.American automotive or truck industries. 1+ years of managing/directing others in addition to delegating/tracking independent work assignments and training programs Interface experience with Suppliers. Controls and Software experience Knowledge of vehicle, especially truck, dynamics and performance.
Knowledge of 5S and Six Sigma problem-solving methodology Familiarity with plant operations, including machining, assembly and heat treatment
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Color vision is desired. Be able to pass DOT physicals and drug test required to obtain and retain CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Assume approx. 25% travel to coordinate field tests. Could include training in Germany, few times a year.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of the job, the associate is exposed to an office atmosphere with some manufacturing/lab exposure.

**Description**

You have extensive knowledge and experience working through IQ issues related to ISP, multi-camera systems, lens development, OIS/VIS systems, and real world use cases. You can succinctly communicate the impact of SW and HW changes on the the end user to a broad audience. Duties also include performing occasional objective image quality measurements and benchmark studies. You will work closely with Hardware and Software development teams focused on developing new camera HW technologies. You have a strong interest in learning new technologies, gaining in-depth knowledge of how systems function and thrive in fast-paced engineering environments. Additionally, you'll help design, create, and run manual and automated subjective image quality tests for multiple camera modules. Developing and fostering partnerships with multi-functional teams is key to long-term success.

The Field Test Engineer interacts closely with the appropriate Business Units to understand product approval and differentiation needs and ensure that Field Testing activities and resources are appropriately deployed to support the needs of the business. This includes providing engineering support, locating and coordinating new and existing field testing sites, interpretation of test results, cost effectively dealing with issues which may arise and technical presentations to global OEM's, partners, customers and internal colleagues.
Responsibilities

Engineering Support and Project Management
•Ensure that field tests are aligned with business goals and there are agreed-upon milestones, dates, and accountability.
•Develop in-depth knowledge of the appropriate field test methods for fuel and lubricant product development and product differentiation.
•Interact with business technical and commercial teams to develop field testing strategies which best support business growth objectives.
•Provide regular updates to business units on technical and field test achievements as well as hurdles and issues.
•Apply engineering skills and knowledge in the development of new field tests and testing procedures.
•Review field test performance with customers and colleagues at milestones to verify field test progression is meeting expectations.
•Apply financial knowledge and methods to evaluate field testing opportunities and strategies to support the business while maximizing utilization of testing assets and return on capital investments.
•Leverage trends in customer industries/marketplaces to shape solutions and approaches for the customer.
•Provide technical presentations and other support to global OEM's, partners, customers and internal colleagues.

Support Division and MT Department Goals
•Track Division and MT Department goals and the group's progress against them.
•Support processes that ensure operating flexibility in response to customer demands.
•Track and report capital and field test budget figures as needed.
•Review project progress on a regular basis and notify management of the issues, roadblocks and successes as they occur.
•Partner across technology groups striving for consistency in processes and resource sharing when practical.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
•BS or MS Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical engineering preferred.
•5 or more years of engineering experience a plus
•General knowledge of automotive, power plant, driveline, hydraulic, and other systems and the OEM's that build these components.
•Be able to conduct data analysis and provide conclusions and/or recommendations for improvement in the field testing. Provide clear, concise and timely reports reviewing the pertinent details, status and results of all test activities.
•Effectively communicate (written and oral) with colleagues and internal/external customers and test site personnel.
•Good personal communication skills to effectively interact with all levels of field test fleet personnel.
•High computer skills, Excel/Microsoft Word/PowerPoint, etc.

Decision Making
•A Field Test report at the end of the field testing procedure should provide an engineering analysis that summarizes the progress, performance, and issues of this testing.
•Keep management aware of all information and issues associated with their work.
•Manage test area in a financially responsible manner by balancing expenses against revenues and by determining return on investments.
