Finlandia University company history timeline

1898

The cornerstone of Old Main, the first building erected at Suomi College, was laid on May 30, 1898.

1900

Dedicated on January 21, 1900, it contained a dormitory, kitchen, laundry, classrooms, offices, library, chapel, and lounge.

1932

Housed in a climate-controlled environment, the archive has been actively collecting Finnish-American and Finnish materials since it was established in 1932.

1939

The frame building was demolished when Nikander Hall, named for Suomi's founder, was constructed in 1939.

1990

Since its grand opening in 1990, Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center has become a community focal point and a national center, offering a multitude of exhibits, lectures, plays, musical programs and community events each year.

1995

In 1995, Finlandia University (then Suomi College) committed to assuming a leadership role in the Upper Peninsula’s economic development.

2000

On July 1, 2000, Suomi College changed its name to Finlandia University.

The Finnish American Reporter, published on the university campus since 2000, provides a forum for all points of view within the Finnish-American community.

2020

In 2020-21 that added up to Finlandia investing more than $3.2 million into the future of our students.

Arts & Sciences will offer B.S. in Biology, Psychology; two new minors beginning Fall 2020

Finlandia’s Suomi College of Arts & Sciences is excited to introduce two new bachelor’s degrees and two new minors for fall 2020.

2021
