Responsibilities

This position will report directly to the Fire Marshal. The Fire Prevention Specialist is an intermediate (See Career Tracks description for performance level expected) level position. Duties include, but are not limited to reading, and understanding Federal, and State, codes regulations and UCDH Fire Life Safety policies. Provide support as directed for Joint Commission requirements under the Environment of Care and Life Safety Chapter. Assist with the scheduling of inspection, testing, and maintenance of contracts managed by the Fire Marshal's Office.

The incumbent must have extensive personal computer skills, the ability to independently coordinate a variety of tasks and functions, take direction from the Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal, work around frequent interruptions, organize workload, set ever-changing priorities, anticipate, and provide for schedule changes, work well under pressure and strict deadlines, and have the ability to realign priorities as necessary. The scope, complexity, or novelties of problems are of a wide variety routinely requiring determinations of appropriateness, and a body of knowledge regarding the fire service and codes/regulations applicable to the hospital environment is required in addition to standard department and University administration. Originality is required in applying standard administrative guides in resolving unusual problems within stated objectives of the department and within policies of the University and/or outside agencies including the State Fire Marshal and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services along with The Joint Commission. This position must be able to gain familiarity and have the ability to prepare documentation at the direction of the Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal. This position is not required to make independent determinations pertaining to regulatory or policy requirements.

Required Qualifications

* Must possess a valid California Driver's License
* Extensive years of experience and knowledge in service-related office work and knowledge of regulatory requirements.
* Experience managing numerous details simultaneously and working under severe time constraints, competing deadlines, conflicting demands, and frequent interruptions.
* Knowledge of construction and/or construction plan review intake requirements and electronic permitting/plan review software.
* Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other computer software to assist with efficient daily operations.
* Advanced skills to operate custom computerized systems for data input and creation of reports.
* Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively communicate with various groups of individuals; produce professional correspondence, reports, forms, statistical data, etc.
* Analytical and problem-solving skills to handle a wide variety of assignments in different phases to determine appropriate action.
* Investigative skills to obtain information needed to clarify inquiries and requests; professional skills to handle sensitive situations diplomatically and to effectively work with a variety of groups of individuals.

Preferred Qualifications

* ICC Permit Technician Certification.
* Experience in a Hospital Environment.
* Experience with accreditation processes.
* Experience with GOVMotus.
* Experience in an emergency response organization, or an organization that requires regulator oversite and reporting.
* Website Management and Development.
* Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements.

Special Requirements

* Typically, this position provides services during normal business hours of operation; however, the individual must be able to work flexible hours that can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional overtime as required to meet operational needs.
* Ability to work in a high-stress structured environment.
* Ability to maintain maximum confidentiality and professionalism while working with complex issues.
* Ability to work in a non-smoking environment.
* The incumbent will be exposed to alarms and other auditory warning devices. Must be able to function in a multi-disciplinary and fast-paced work environment while maintaining the need for quality, accuracy, completeness, and timelines.
* This position requires individuals to have the mobility to climb ladders and stairs and be able to differentiate between various alarm signals.
* This position may, at times require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present and, as such, the incumbent will be required to participate in a medical monitoring program and other programs necessary to enter a hazardous materials environment.
* Will be required to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; tolerate very hot and very cold temperatures; walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; work at heights greater than 10 feet; climb ladders or steps to reach objects; work in small, cramped areas; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; discriminate among colors or match colors of wiring systems and color-coded valves and piping; stand or walk for extended periods of time with the inability to rest at will, and use arms above shoulder level.
* When not performing duties in the field, incumbents work in an indoor office setting and are required to enter data into a terminal, PC, or keyboard device; produce written documents using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; use graphic instructions, blueprints, and layouts as part of the plan review process when checking for code compliance; and sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move at will.
* Must pass a pre-employment Live Scan Fingerprinting Background check.

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
