The working environments include office, manufacturing sites and laboratory settings. Overnight travel, to confer and work with customers, attend technical conferences and to conduct and monitor tests, is typically less than 20% of time.

Qualifications:

BS plus 3 years minimum related experience (or MS in technical area)

Degrees in fire protection, fluid mechanics, electrical or mechanical engineering; knowledge of, or employment in, fire protection equipment, pumps, valves, or related research, design or manufacturing industry experience is preferred.

Successful candidate should have demonstrated project management skills, superior written and verbal communication skills, and computer proficiency with programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook. Professional registration and / or knowledge of FM Global loss prevention guidelines preferred.

Candidate must possess outstanding relationship management skills including:

Ability to travel domestically and internationally for up to 2 weeks at a time.

Candidate must have the ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and the ability to understand and follow English instructions.

Summary
Plans and coordinates one or more programs relating to the Laboratory fire protection engineering program, impairment control program, facility and programmatic surveillance program activities in compliance with current codes and standards, DOE orders and best industry practices. Specific duties may include establishing and monitoring fire protection and loss prevention programs including fire protection engineering, while assisting other fire protection staff in surveillance, and fire alarm system operations. Works with all levels of LANL management and interacts with external agencies and/or community organizations. Reviews and recommends actions on fire protection program related issues.

Current advanced-level NICET certification(s) in one or more disciplines of fire protection.
Demonstrated expert design experience in fire protection systems for commercial and / or industrial facilities.
Demonstrated expert application of building codes and standards to facilities designs.
Demonstrated ability to apply engineering judgement to facility and operations-based engineering challenges.
Demonstrated advanced level experience working with AHJ requirements.
Demonstrated expert experience leading a design effort.
Demonstrated expert ability in preparing calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges.
Broad knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
Demonstrated ability in coaching, and mentoring junior personnel.
Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.

Education
Position typically requires a bachelors degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

System One has a temp to hire employment conversion opportunity for a Fire Protection Engineer who either has a P.E. or ready to get their P.E. within the next year. The Fire Protection Engineer will join the Fire Engineering Division in support of various government projects. You will be providing a broad array of Fire and Life Safety Engineering and Fire Protection System Design, Construction, and Management services to our Government clients.

The Fire Protection Engineer Requirements/Responsibilities

• B.S. Degree, or higher, in Engineering, preferably Fire Protection Engineering.
• Professional Engineering (PE) License in Fire Protection Engineering, or ability to obtain within a year of hire.
• 4+ years of work experience in Fire Protection Engineering design and project management
• Possess certifications, training, and working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards including NFPA13, 2001, 70, and 72.
• Experience in using AutoCAD, Revit, and Hydraulic Calculation software including HASS, AutoSPRINK, and HydroCAD. Ability to design fire alarm, fire suppression, and life safety systems in Revit


Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and oversee engineering activities including project execution
• Conduct Fire Protection Engineering inspection, studies, design, and complex calculations
• Complete site surveys and identify code issues and offer compliant solutions
• Perform interpretation and application of local, state, and federal requirements, and regulations, relative to all aspects of fire protection and life safety
• Prepare and present technical audits, reports, and exhibits
• Design fire suppression system, fire alarm system, and prepare technical specifications
• Ability to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail and demonstrate problem-solving skills
