Fire protection specialist job description

Upon award of the UFC Inspection contract on or about July 2022, Versar will provide facility inspection teams that identify engineering deficiencies for new and existing construction in accordance with (IAW) various Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) standards. Targeted services include:

• Perform evaluations IAW UFC 1-201-02 to establish compliance with minimum life safety and habitability requirements.
• Perform inspections on in-progress construction efforts IAW applicable UFC standards.
• Review plans for military construction projects, facility modernization, rehabilitation programs, or self-help projects for compliance with the appropriate UFC standards.

The inspection teams will be primarily located in Kuwait or Jordan with inspection assignments anywhere within the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR) including Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, UAE, Uzbekistan, and Yemen. All services will be performed at existing and future US Military and coalition occupied facilities.

Position Requirements:

• Shall be trained within the trades of fire protection
• Possess at least two years of experience demonstrating the ability to apply the standards of UFC 1-200-01, UFC 1-201-02 and the UFC Series 3-600.
• Have no less than two years of experience performing fire protection inspections, reviews, and/or assessments.
• Shall be considered a qualified person in his/her respective field (i.e. the Fire Protection Specialist shall be qualified to test automatic sprinkler and fire suppression systems).
• International experience and CENTCOM specific experience is preferred.

Other Information:

• The candidate must be a US citizen or a citizen from a NATO participating country that is able to obtain a US or NATO secret security clearance.
• The candidate must have the ability to work under austere conditions in the CENTCOM AOR and must pass a medical screening physical to obtain a "fitness for duty" letter.
• The candidate must pass a background check and be cleared by the US government.
• The candidate must possess a valid Passport with a minimum of 18 months before expiration.
• Candidates should expect to work six days a week, 12 hours a day
• Lodging and transportation will be provided by Versar or the US Government. Meals will be provided by the US Government in Dining Facilities or by Versar through Per Diem reimbursement.
• The candidate must commit to a one-year employment term. During this term, the candidate will receive two, two-week Rest and Relaxation periods outside of CENTCOM.
• Standard US wages will be uplifted for remote working conditions, and an elevated workweek of up to 72 hours per week.

The Staff Fire Protection Specialist will perform tasks requiring the application of standard fire protection engineering techniques and procedures\. This position will work on multi\-discipline projects and prepare comprehensive fire protection packages including fire suppression, fire alarm, and life\-safety systems\.

Successful candidates will join a national team of Fire Protection Engineers who work on a wide range of exciting and challenging projects including airports, aircraft storage and maintenance hangars, energy storage facilities, central utility plants, manufacturing and food processing plants, industrial and petroleum processing sites, state\-of\-the\-art information technology facilities, aircraft manufacturing plants, educational and cultural facilities and more\. + Design, specify, and provide multi\-discipline solutions of the following fire protection systems: Wet\-pipe, dry\-pipe, pre\-action, deluge, and foam/water fire suppression systems\. Fire water supply infrastructure including fire water storage tanks, fire pumps, underground and aboveground distribution piping and associated appurtenances\. Outdoor fire suppression systems including monitors, spray systems, and exposure protection systems\. Addressable and non\-addressable voice evacuation fire alarm systems including initiation devices, supervision devices, and audible and visual notification appliances\. Releasing systems for pre\-action, foam/water, and clean agent systems\.

+ Perform fire protection calculations including the hydraulic analysis of fire water supply and demand, battery calculations, and voltage drop calculations\.

+ Evaluate building and life safety requirements including building area and height limitations, building construction types, fire resistive assemblies and opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, building egress, and active and passive smoke management systems\.

+ Provide construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, review of contractor shop drawings and calculations, field inspections, and testing of fire protection systems\.
+ Perform site evaluations and document existing fire protection systems\.

+ Prepare project budgets and cost estimates\.

+ Responsible for QA/QC process adherence\.

+ All other duties as assigned

**Qualifications**

+ A Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Technology or related field and 4 years of related experience, an Associate's Degree in a related field and 6 years of related experience, or 10 years of related experience\.

+ A minimum NICET Level 1 in Water\-Based System Layout, Fire Alarm Systems, or Special Hazards Systems \(National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies\)\.

+ Must have the ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing and potential clients, including, but not limited to DOE, aerospace, military, food and consumer product manufacturers, pharmaceutical, laboratories, and others necessary to perform work\.

+ Familiarity with building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and refinery/industrial API guidelines is strongly preferred\.

+ Prior experience with energy storage systems and NFPA 885 is a plus\.

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem\-solving skills is required\.

Summary: Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal, performs technical and specialized inspection work examining buildings for life safety, building construction and specifications to determine compliance with the Celina Fire Department Fire Prevention Code. Will be responsible for coordinating all field inspections and reports directly to the Fire Marshal.

Essential Job Functions:

* Advises supervisory personnel of any field conditions that are potentially hazardous and/or controversial
* Provides direction and/or technical assistance to contractors and property owners on building projects
* Conducts fire safety inspections of places of assembly, businesses, industrial, institutional, schools, and public food service establishments for existing or potential life and fire hazards, and assures that all occupancies comply with local and state fire prevention regulations
* Prepares and submits reports relative to findings from fire safety inspections. Orders corrections of hazardous conditions and provides follow-up inspections and /or enforcement as necessary
* Inspects projects under construction for compliance with fire codes
* Maintains inspection records and statistics as required
* Performs commercial fire plans examination and review on proposed new development, new construction, and renovations projects
* Inspections of fire alarm, sprinkler suppression & special hazards systems and work with owners concerning false/unwanted alarms
* Respond to complaints from the public and coordinate with the fire department
* Assist local schools with in-house life-safety issues, fire drills, etc.
* Participate in fire safety training classes
* Reviews pertinent technical reports

Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:

* High school diploma or GED
* Associate's degree with an emphasis in Fire Science Technology, Engineering, or Architectural Degree or National Certifications in Fire Protection Systems; and
* A minimum of six (6) years of fire inspector and plan review experience
* Strongly preferred - a Texas Commission on Fire Protection certification as a:
* Fire Inspector
* Fire Investigator
* Plans Examiner

* International Code Council Inspector I, Inspector II, and Plans Examiner certifications strongly preferred
* National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies certifications
* Basic computer skills including proficiency in the use of MS Office software and Emergency Reporting Inspections Software
* High level of interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, government officials, City of Celina departments, and contractors
* Ability to function effectively as a member of the Incident Management Team, compliant with National Incident Management System protocols during emergency or disaster situations
* Ability to work as part of a team or independently to accomplish complex tasks simultaneously
* A valid Texas driver's license
* Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining Incident Command System (ICS) certification at the IS-100, 200, 700, and 800, levels within a year of employment.
