Rural electrification officially came to Wisconsin on May 7, 1937, when Richland Electric Cooperative went into service.
In 1937, the first electric cooperative utility pole was erected in Arkansas by First Electric Cooperative in Jacksonville, marking the development of a system that now covers 60 percent of the state’s land area.
In 1937, the REA drafted the Electric Cooperative Corporation Act, a model law that states could adopt to enable the formation and operation of not-for-profit, consumer-owned electric cooperatives.
On February 15, 1938, Aiken Electric Cooperative became the first cooperative in South Carolina to receive its charter.
The fruits of their labor was realized when line construction began in May 1938.
The cooperative energized its first line on November 8, 1938 to begin providing electric service.
Bailey County Electric Cooperative (BCEC) was incorporated in 1938.
Three more cooperatives saw their beginnings during December 1939: On December 14, 1939, Santee Electric Cooperative was incorporated.
On December 19, 1939, Laurens Electric Cooperative became the second cooperative in South Carolina to energize its first line.
The first lines constructed by SREC were placed in service and the first co-op members were served in the fall of 1939.
In 1940, 112,050 people in Arkansas had electricity while the population of the state stood at 1.95 million.
As a result, in 1942, America’s electric cooperatives formed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) to provide a unified voice for cooperatives and to represent their interests in Washington, DC.
By 1945, the last of Wisconsin's electric cooperatives had been organized (not counting six subsequent mergers). Nationwide, there are now about 930 rural electric cooperative systems.
In 1953, construction of a power generation cooperative, Western Electric Cooperative (now Western Farmers Electric Cooperative), began.
