Summary:
According to department policies, procedures and protocols, assists healthcare team members in delivering patient care to emergency room patients. This includes preparing patients for examinations and treatments, taking patient histories and vital signs, obtaining specimens, setting-up rooms with necessary supplies and equipment, and assisting physicians and staff nurses during treatments. Transports or escorts patients to examination area, treatment rooms, nursing units, etc. Provides variety of respiratory therapy-therapeutic treatments.
Responsibilities And Duties:

Patient Care Activities: Takes vital signs and weight; participates in patient admission and transfer; prepares patient for physician evaluation; measures and records intake and output; performs CPR; performs EKG; obtains vital signs; places patient on cardiac monitor; obtains oxygen saturation levels; provides oxygen per physician order/protocol; assists patient with activities; assists with turning, positioning, and other ADL. Transfer patients safely to and from diagnostic testing, in-patient units, and other areas of the medical center. Responds to code assists. Utilizes orthopedic equipment; applies bandages and restraints as ordered. Applies compresses and bandages; applies heat and cold as directed; performs postmortem care; maintains Foley catheter to straight drain; performs venous access to peripheral sites for lab draws, initiates peripheral IV catheters per doctor order/protocol; discontinue peripheral intravenous catheters; cleanses wounds and applies sterile dressings as ordered. Delivers and retrieves specimens to and from the laboratories within the hospital. Assists physician with suturing. Documents interventions, patients responses and care appropriately. Does not monitor or administer dosages/rate/infusions of medications other than normal saline e of any kind by any route. Does not perform triage.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required and ALS certification as indicated above.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

REASONING ABILITY:

Cleans and disinfects interior of ambulance. Cleans and details exterior of ambulance. Cleaning and maintaining the cleanliness and proper stocking of the ambulance, company vehicles, equipment, office, lounge, and bathrooms.
Must be able to safely lift, transfer and maneuver patients in and out of ambulances, facilities, residences and other locations.
Must be able to effectively communicate with patients, family members, medical personnel, and the general public in verbal and written form.
Must have reliable transportation and must report to work punctually for all scheduled shifts and in proper uniform.
Maintaining a clean and complete uniform, personal hygiene, and professional, pleasant and polite demeanor to all persons with whom the individual comes in contact with while on duty.

Inspecting and promptly reporting damage, deficiencies, safety issues or other problems with ambulances, company vehicles, equipment and supplies, or any other matters relevant to the safe, efficient and proper operation of the company. Such reports are to be made immediately to Administration.
Reporting immediately to Administration in writing any change in the employee's driving record status, certification status or any other change in circumstances or status which could affect the individual's ability to effectively and safely perform the duties of the position or to otherwise qualify for the position held.

Paramedics provide emergency treatment, including advanced life support, to patients in emergencies. The Paramedic's role is to assess the urgent medical needs of patients and stabilize their conditions. Paramedics are the most highly trained emergency medical responders.
A caregiver in this position works from: 11:00am - 11:00pm or 7:00pm - 7:00am (will work 2 - 11:00am- 11:00pm) and then a night shift. Every other weekend. Every other holiday. Eventually it will be just 11a-11p in the future.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
* Provide duties that assist in providing patient care in the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
* Obtain and record vital signs,
* Perform EKGs, CPR, phlebotomy and oral, nasal and ET suctioning.
* Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy and saline locks.
* Notify the RN and/or physician of rhythm changes.
* Apply orthopaedic appliances and simple splints.
* Size crutches and teach crutch walking.
* Assist with equipment setup, chest tubes, gastric lavage, LP, etc.
* Assist with restraint and seclusion of patients and apply restraint devices.
* Transport patients and specimens.
* Assist with sterile procedures and cleaning and maintaining supplies and equipment.
* Maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy.
* Perform fluid/drug administration.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* Completion of an accredited EMS-Paramedic training program
* Current licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMTP) in Ohio
* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
* Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or Amercian Red Cross
* Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of start date in the Emergency Department
* Clinical experience through an EMS Paramedic training program
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)
* One year of experience as an EMT-P

Physical Requirements:
* Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

SUMMARY: Provides advanced life support and basic life support emergency medical care, patient assessment and care, transport services, and other services by performing the following duties. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Safe and efficient operation of ambulances and other company vehicles and equipment.

Full compliance with all applicable state, local, and federal regulations and laws, pertaining to but not limited to protocols, standards of care, motor vehicle operations, and patient rights.

Must be available, willing and able to work, when requested up to and including 60 minutes prior to the scheduled shift start time and may be dispatched an additional transport, if the employee is still on the clock up to and including their scheduled shift end time.
