There are different kinds of imaging devices, this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections. **A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 3:00pm - 10:00pm and 10:00pm - 6:30am.** A caregiver who excels in this role will: + Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages. + Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular). + Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis. + Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam. + Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation. + Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam. + Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures. + Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations. + Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules. + Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS. + Complete after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork. + Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator. + Process billing via RIS. + Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions. + Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies. + Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers. + Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols. + Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors. + Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations. + Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment. + Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums. + RDMS must be maintained and in good standing. + If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: + Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing. + Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire. + One certification within abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire.
