Fisher Island Club company history timeline

1944

Vanderbilt died on January 8, 1944 of a heart ailment at the age of 65.

1946

Moore would pass away shortly after in 1946, and the estate was sold yet again by his wife to the designer of the PT boat of WWII, Garfield Wood.

1963

In 1963, Garfield Wood sold his 13.5-acre estate to an investment group headed by Charles G. Rebozo, (Bebe), a friend of president Richard Nixon.

1971

He sold his 13.2-acre estate to an investment group headed by Charles G. Rebozo (Bebe) including Richard Nixon, George Smathers and five others, but continued living in the mansion until his death in 1971.

1979

Additional tracts sold in 1979 to Island Developers Ltd., a partnership that included Bebe Rebozo’s nephew, among others.

1987

Redevelopment on the island began in the early 80s, and in 1987 the Fisher Island Club was opened.

2007

2007 – The Fisher Island Club began a $60 million restoration project to update the Vanderbilt Mansion, improve the golf course and amenities, hotel, and other facilities.

2013

In the summer of 2013, the Rebirth of Fisher Island was completed and included a thoughtful restoration and renovation of the Vanderbilt mansion, Club Cottages, golf course, tennis center, spa, beach club and private marinas.

2018

With an estimated average resident income of $2.2 million in 2018, the only accessible by ferry island is home to the wealthiest of the wealthy and boasts multi-million dollar waterfront properties, a private golf course, a hotel, and much more.

2019

2019 – Fisher Island celebrated its 100th anniversary, marking Carl Fisher’s purchase of the barrier island.
