Fisher & Paykel Appliances history

The pair’s business instincts and talent for sales saw Fisher & Paykel grow as an importer of products manufactured in England and North America, but in 1938 the New Zealand government’s ban on imported products posed a challenge to the new business’s survival.

Around the same time, in 1955, Fisher & Paykel acquired cooking range manufacturer H. E. Shacklock Ltd, which dominated the domestic marketing in New Zealand.

Allied Industries Ltd established to manufacture Murphy radios and radiograms and later (1960) television receivers.

Established in New Zealand in 1969, our business was built on a vision to emulate the body’s natural humidification processes.

The first respiratory humidifier was sold in 1970 and was marketed internationally.

Channeling significant amounts of profit into capital expenditure and research and development, in 1985 the ECS electronic washing machine was launched after five years of intensive development.

By 1990, the medical division of Fisher & Paykel Industries had been renamed Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, and annual sales for the division had grown to NZ$29 million.

The company’s fearless approach to solving seemingly impossible problems set the design team in good stead, and in 1996 the first DishDrawer was released to widespread acclaim.

The medical division had proved increasingly profitable and by the first half of 1997-98, contributed 50% of the company profit and exported over 95% of its production.

In 2001, the appliances business divested, and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare became a separate company listed on the New Zealand and Australia stock exchanges.

In 2002 the brand launched the first 30" Built in Wall Oven with the brand's patented Aerotech™ technology that circulates heat evenly throughout the oven on every shelf.

That sameyear marked the manufacturing milestone in production: onemillion appliances in a calendar year.2004 marked the launch of the SmartLoad dryer, the world’sfirst large-capacity, top-loading dryer.

The quantities of recyclable material frommanufacturing processes are around 400 tons per year.In July 2009, two Haier representatives became board directorsfor Fisher & Paykel Appliances Holdings Limited.
