2002: Five Guys decides DC metro-area residents shouldn’t be the only ones to experience their burgers and start to franchise in Virginia and Maryland.

2003

2003: Five Guys sells out of franchise territory within 18 months and starts to open the rest of the country for franchise rights.

2003 – Present: Five Guys expands to over 1,000 locations in 47 states and 6 Canadian provinces.

Early in 2003, Jerry and Janie, together with the “Five Guys,” began offering franchise opportunities.

2004

Famed New York City restaurateur Danny Meyer founded Shake Shack in 2004, which has 15 restaurants.

2009

Such are the problems of being the fastest-growing restaurant chain in the United States, which has doubled its number of stores since 2009.

Meyer says he doesn’t see Murrell as a competitor but rather as “a friendly restaurant colleague.” Murrell actually asked Meyer to speak at a Five Guys franchisee convention in 2009, which Meyer says struck people as “odd.” He went anyway and talked about hospitality.

In 2009 President Obama stopped in for a cheeseburger, with dozens of cameramen in tow.

2011

The entire chain, including sales at the franchises, will surpass $1 billion in revenues this year, up from $950 million in 2011.

In 2011, Five Guys became the largest chain in America to install those crazy Coke freestyle machines.

2012

By 2012, the chain has continued its expansion, with stores in over 1000 locations operating in 47-plus states, and also in neighboring Canada.
