Flamingo Gardens company history timeline

1927

They purchased 320 acres of land on Long Key in the Everglades, and incorporated Flamingo Groves on January 2, 1927.

Flamingo Gardens started life as a citrus orchard called “Flamingo Groves” in 1927, having been founded by Floyd and Jane Wray.

1928

But earlier, in 1928, the Wrays envisioned a botanical showcase of subtropical flora, and began a project that was to become one of the first botanical gardens and tourist attractions in South Florida.

1959

After Floyd Wray's death in 1959, his wife's interest in the Everglades led to the establishment of Flamingo Gardens.

1964

In 1964, five years after Floyd Wray died, Jane Wray established the Floyd L. Wray Memorial Foundation "to establish a museum and botanical garden park, emphasizing the history of the Florida Everglades." The foundation provided for the Flamingo Gardens that exists today.

1969

"She formed the foundation to protect this beautiful place." Jane Wray died on May 26, 1969.

1985

He left the park in 1985 and resides in Davie.

1990

The name changed to Flamingo Gardens, the botanical gardens were expanded, and the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary was added in 1990.

2000

A half-acre free-flight aviary is home to more than 250 birds representing 45 species — in the last 20 years, these birds have produced over 2000 offspring which have been released into the wild.

The grove grew to 2000 acres and reportedly held 60 different variety of citrus back then.

2018

The little baby boy hatched August 2018, the first in 30 years! Initially he was hand reared but now joins his flock for much of the day, although he is still being fed separately.
