The Sheriff’s Posse was started in 1946 when the local Sheriff published a document that contained the names of men and women that could be called upon to help with law enforcement and search and rescue needs.
On March 2, 1967, the Governor signed into law this Act, removing deputies from the "Spoils System," and the law has since been updated to include every county.
When the Association was first formed all officers and board members were sheriffs, and it remained that way until June 26, 1970 when, at the annual convention in Kalispell, the constitution was amended to allow deputies to hold office.
