Khan was born in Pakistan and moved to the United States in 1967 at age 16 to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Leaving in 1978, Khan used personal savings and a $50,000 loan from the Small Business Loan Corporation to start his own company, Bumper Works.
He began working at Flex-N-Gate while in college and bought the company in 1980, according to an online U. of I. biography.
