Florida Panthers company history timeline
A few months later, in April 1993, he announced that the team would be called the Florida Panthers.
They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). It was founded in 1993 as an expansion team.
He spent one season as the head coach of the AHL’s Springfield Indians (1993–94) before joining the Quebec Nordiques–Colorado Avalanche franchise of the NHL as an assistant coach.
In 1995–96 the team, led by the standout goaltending of John Vanbiesbrouck, earned a postseason berth and proceeded to upset two higher seeds in the Eastern Conference en route to the Stanley Cup finals, in which they were swept by the Colorado Avalanche.
They play home games at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida; the Panthers are the southernmost team in the NHL. The team made one appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals, in 1996; they lost to the Colorado Avalanche in four games.
The Panthers defeated the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference First Round, 4-2, for their first playoff series victory since 1996.

Despite the limitations of the NHL’s salary cap, which had been put into place in 2005 to make the league more competitive, Quenneville led the Hawks to the playoffs in each of his first seven seasons with the team.
He returned to the Avalanche, this time as the head coach, and spent three seasons in Colorado before he and that franchise parted ways after the 2007–08 season.
Quenneville joined the Blackhawks as a scout the following season, but he served in that capacity only for a short time before the team promoted him to head coach after having fired his predecessor just four games into the 2008–09 season.
In 2010 Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup finals to capture the Blackhawks’ first title in 48 seasons.
In 2011–12 Florida rebounded to capture the first division title in franchise history, but it lost its opening playoff series to the New Jersey Devils.
Despite media reports saying Vincent Viola paid between $230 million and $250 million for the Panthers, operating rights to the BB&T Center and other Sunrise Sports & Entertainment entities in 2013, the West Point graduate actually paid an enterprise value of closer to $160 million.
Another Stanley Cup—over the Boston Bruins—followed in 2013.
He became only the second Panther to ever receive the award (the first was Jonathan Huberdeau in 2013), and the first Panthers defenseman to do so.
Huberdeau was the first Panther to receive the award (Aaron Ekblad would later receive it in 2015).
On January 14, 2016, he notched his 783rd career coaching victory to become the second winningest coach in NHL history, behind Scotty Bowman.
Huizenga passed away not long after on March 22, 2018.
The team got off to another slow start in 2018–19, and Quenneville was fired after the Blackhawks opened the season with a 6–6–3 record.
He ultimately notched 230 wins for the franchise before retiring in 2019.
Florida did not qualify again for the playoffs until the 2020–21 season, which was shortened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the team lost in the first round.
