Florida SouthWesternState College company history timeline

1962

Florida SouthWestern State College, originally known as Edison Junior College, admitted its first students in the fall of 1962.

1965

The Lee Campus (now known as the Thomas Edison Campus) opened in 1965 on an 80-acre site with three buildings.

1968

The school's nursing program began on campus with a $50,000 donation in 1968.

1972

The college's name changed to Edison Community College in 1972, shortly after the first nursing class graduated.

1981

Edison State collaborated with the Edison & Ford Estates to bring the Thomas Edison Black Maria Film Festival to Fort Myers for the first time since the festival began touring nationally in 1981.

1986

The college's primary arts center, the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, opened its doors in 1986 and serves as the premier Performing Arts venue in Lee County.

2002

2002 Edison adopted as Master Action Plan for the next decade.

2004

The college again changed its name in 2004, to simply Edison College.

2005

2005 graduates of the College's accredited Radiologic Technology Program achieve a 100% pass rate on all national certification examinations.

2008

In 2008, the college saw its fourth name change to Edison State College, and a new torch logo with blue and yellow colors to reflect the college's new status as a baccalaureate-granting state college.

2009

Completed extensive remodeling across the district, including a $7 million renovation of the Richard H. Rush Library at the Lee Campus, dedicated in January of 2009.

Two officers were sworn in at the May 2009 meeting of the District Board of Trustees.

2011

Through the HOPE Scholar Program, the College, in conjunction with the Edison State College Foundation, distributed more than $800,000 in 2011-12 to 325 promising, low-income, first-generation-in-college students.

2012

Selected the College's fourth president, Doctor Jeff Allbritten, to assume office July 31, 2012.

Implemented the Cornerstone Experience course as part of the College's Quality Enhancement Plan, serving 217 students in the first cohort in Spring of 2012.

2013

Edison Collegiate High School, Charlotte Campus, holds its first graduation on May 17, 2013

2014

Edison State College holds its final commencement ceremony under the Edison name, May 2, 2014

The name, logo, and colors were changed for the fifth and most recent time in 2014.

2020

Henry Patterson Memorial Bench placed in Barron Park in LaBelle, Florida in November of 2020.
