Florida Technical College company history timeline

1982

It was founded in 1982 to provide post-secondary degrees.

The Orlando main campus opened in 1982, and offered an approach to education that had students take one class at a time.

1984

Notable alumni include five Space Shuttle astronauts, the first female four-star general in United States military history, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist in rowing, a two-time major league World Series-winning pitcher, a National Teacher of the Year, and a member of the LPGA tour.

In 1984, FTC opened a campus in Jacksonville.

2009

In 2009, a $1 million endowment gift from Northrop Grumman Corporation provided ongoing support for the students’ work.

2013

The Indian River Lagoon Research Institute was established in 2013 to improve and sustain the health of the one-of-a-kind estuary.

2015

Opened in 2015, the Harris Student Design Center is a 11,500-square-foot student project facility.

2016

Doctor McCay was inaugurated as university president in 2016 after serving as Florida Tech’s provost, executive vice president and chief operating officer for 13 years.

In 2016, Lake Technical College entered into a partnership with Lake Sumter State College (LSSC) and began offering Practical Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Paramedic, GED and ESOL programs on the LSSC South Lake and Sumter campuses.

In 2016, a former administrative assistant filed a lawsuit under the False Claims Act against the school, alleging that the school had enrolled students who didn't have a high school diploma or GED to increase the school's enrollment numbers, resulting in additional federal financial aid funds.

2017

In the Fall of 2017, Lake Technical College opened the Center for Advanced Manufacturing to meet the growing need to prepare skilled technicians in CNC machining, welding, fabrication and other manufacturing careers.

2018

FTC cooperated with the investigation and settled the case in February 2018, agreeing to pay $600,000 and stating that the admissions staff and managers involved in the situation were no longer employed at the school.

2020

In June 2020, Orlando Magic named FTC the official technical college of the team.

2021

Also in 2021, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Metro Orlando and FTC awarded the first Reach Higher Business Opportunity Scholarship.
