Food for the Hungry company history timeline

1971

FH's first official response was to help refugees of war in the newly forming nation of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) in 1971.

Food for the Hungry, Inc. (FH/US) was incorporated by Larry Ward in the United States in 1971 and has existed continuously since then.

1972

Early projects included helping refugees in war-torn Bangladesh, victims of the 1972 Nicaragua earthquake, rescuing Vietnamese "boat people" from the South China Sea, and helping hungry and needy people in Haiti and West Africa.

1974

He moved the offices to Arizona in 1974.

1978

The child sponsorship program was started in 1978.

Beginning in 1978, FH began to more intentionally increase its development work.

1979

Hunger Corps, the people-sending division of Food for the Hungry, began in 1979.

1980

1980s In 1980, FH launched its long-term missionary and self-support staff program called Hunger Corps, which provided a way for dedicated individuals to work in the field.

Ward incorporated Food for the Hungry International (FHI) in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1980.

1984

In 1984, Doctor Larry Ward retired and appointed Ted Yamamori as his successor and President of FH.

1997

Beginning in 1997 FH began pioneering the innovative model of Cascade Groups into their developmental structure and programming.

2001

Doctor Yamamori retired in 2001, at which point two people were hired to replace him.

2003

In 2003, FH mourned the passing of Doctor Larry Ward.

2006

Since 2006, FH has consolidated its United States and international operations, led by President Gary Edmonds.

2010

2010s In a decade of unprecedented global challenges, FH responded to the needs of the 2010 Haiti earthquake that destroyed nearly 1 million homes, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, and cyclones Idai and Kenneth in Mozambique.

2011

Since September 2011, CFCT has formed the base of all Food for the Hungry program models.

2019

A highlight of the decade was reestablishing FH work in Vietnam in 2019.

2020

In the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, FH pivoted to help our global communities protect themselves from the virus.

In early 2020, Mark Viso was announced as the new CEO and President.
