1960

Claims: A Place at the Table gives a brief survey of the history of food insecurity in the United States and the relationship of food insecurity to funding for social services programs. It claims that after the success of earlier food assistance programs almost eradicated hunger the 1960’s, hunger has been steadily growing since the presidency of Ronald Reagan.

1967

He founded the world’s first food bank: St Mary`s Food Bank Alliance, in 1967.

The first official food bank was established in 1967 by a man named John van Hengel.

A Quiet Beginning in 1967

1976

Soon, similar initiatives emerged in other cities throughout the USA. In 1976 van Hengel established Second Harvest to assist these local initiatives and facilitate the work of food banks.

1977

By 1977, food banks were established in 18 cities across the country.

1980

Fact: The Oklahoma City Food Bank was the 21st food bank in the United States when it opened in 1980.

1981

Over 90 percent of food banks are established in the United States after 1981.

1982

In the Food Bank’s first year (1982), fewer than 330,000 pounds of food were recovered, stored and distributed.

1985

The same happened in France, where the comedian Coluche started the "restos du coeur" (restaurants with a heart) in 1985.

1987

1987: Wornom sells his stake in the company to Montrose Capital.

1990

1990: Montrose purchases half of Proctor's share in The Pantry.

1996

1996: Peter J. Sodini is hired as CEO and president of The Pantry.

1997

1997: The Pantry purchases the Lil' Champ convenience store chain from Docks United StatesA.

1998

In 1998 The Pantry acquired almost 155 stores through the acquisition of smaller chains.

1999

To pay off debt from its many acquisitions, The Pantry went public in June 1999.

In 1999 The Pantry rose from being ranked the 33rd largest chain in Convenience Store News Top 50 Companies to the tenth.

Also in 1999 The Pantry purchased 19 stores from Tip Top Convenience Stores, Inc., operating under the name Big K. Big K stores were located mostly in Mississippi and Alabama.

The Pantry's many new stores caused a surge in sales and profits--in 1999 The Pantry posted a net income of $10.4 million on revenues of $160 million.

2000

Fact: According to the USDA, 33,231,000 million individuals were food insecure in 2000.

Although the Pantry continued to acquire new stores in 2000, Sodini stressed that he did not have a specific goal in mind.

In 2000 the company's top priority was to remain profitable. 'We're not into collecting trophies and we're not in this as a philanthropic venture,' said Sodini.

2004

In January of 2004, The Food Service Center, Inc. in Sioux Falls and The Black Hills Regional Food Bank, Inc, in Rapid City merged and rebranded to the Community Food Banks of South Dakota, Inc.

2005

On September 2, 2005, in one day, more than 1 million pounds of water, diapers and food are collected in the single biggest food drive ever held in Austin in response to our Hurricane Katrina relief work.

2008

Fact: According to the USDA, 49,108,000 million individuals were food insecure in 2008.

In the years following the global financial crisis of 2008, food banks have faced an ever increasing demand, raising fears that the supply would no longer be sufficient.

In 2008, the network changed its name to Feeding America to better reflect the organization's mission.

2010

In May of 2010, the Charles H Burke Center for Hunger Relief opened in the former Pepsi warehouse.

Pierre communities, Feeding South Dakota celebrated a mortgage burning ceremony in December 2010.

2012

By 2012, it was clear that all three food banks, and both food pantries, had outgrown their buildings.

2013

In January 2013, the food bank and food pantry moved into a new location on North Creek Drive in Rapid City.

2016

In the spring of 2016, a new distribution center opened in Pierre.

2018

That’s why the One Initiative is on a mission to feed one million hungry children in 2018 by donating meals to partnered food banks.

2019

In December of 2019, news from China began to emerge of a new and highly contagious coronavirus (Covid-19) that had not previously been seen in humans.

2020

The first confirmed death of a human was reported to be on January 9, 2020 in Wuhan.

At the end of FY20 (June 2020), nearly 4.2 million meals had been distributed through our mobile food pantries to an estimated 335,000 South Dakotans in need, an increase of 2.8 million meals and 177,000 individuals.

In October of 2020, Feeding South Dakota announced the permanent closure of the food pantry program in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.

2021

Rapid City continued to serve 14 neighborhoods in its community and Sioux Falls began serving 5 neighborhoods with a plan to serve 15 by the end of March 2021.
