Foodland company history timeline

1948

On May 6, 1948, together with the Lau family, Sully opened Hawaii's first modern supermarket at Market City in Honolulu.

1955

In 1955 Reg opened a new self-serve grocery store in Birdwood.

1960

In the 1960's he married Kathleen and she helped to push him into renting his first store (Jiffy Food Mart) in Roebuck, Alabama.

1972

They all helped with the Grand Opening Sale in July 1972.

1980

After some years of consolidation, Reg and his son Barry focused their retail energies on Lobethal, building a new supermarket in the Main Street in 1980.

In 1980, Foodland launched its first state-wide community program, Shop for Better Education.

1999

A second major community focused program, Give Aloha, launched in 1999 focused on supporting non-profit organizations throughout Hawaii.

2004

In January 2004, David retired and his son John David Hill purchased the store.

2010

In February of 2010, Foodland Farms opened its second store in Aina Haina on Oahu.

2016

On August 31, 2016, Foodland celebrated its grand return to Ala Moana Center to provide customers an exciting new reimagined food shopping and dining experience.

2018

In 2018, Klose’s restored a piece of its history by purchasing a store in the township of Birdwood, returning to that community after 48 years.
