Pros of working at Ford Motor

To me, in the 32 and a half year's that I worked there, I couldn't have had any better factory job anywhere, period.

Cons of working at Ford Motor

There are no cons whatsoever in my experience when I worked at Ford. I worked all my year's at Ford as an hourly worker.

Ford Motor benefits

My favorite perk is our medical benefits. We have excellent benefits. I retired at age 52, and now at age 75, our benefits keep getting better. Everything we are thankful for from Ford Motor Company is because of our strong UAW Union. If not for our Union, we wouldn't have half of what we have today.

What do you like best about Ford Motor's CEO and the leadership team?

What I like best is Company and Union contracts and negotiations.

How would you improve Ford Motor's culture?

Keep doing what they are doing and for sure, stay Union strong.

How did you prepare for the Ford Motor interview?

I hired in at Ford Motor Company in 1968. Back then it was simple, you just filled out an application and told them you need a job and you want to work at whatever job they have open.

How does your compensation at Ford Motor compare to the industry average?

Ford has always paid good wages.

What brings you the most joy at Ford Motor?

Making good wages, great benefits, and paying 100% of my son's 7 year college education at Ohio State University, rent, food, books, and him graduating with a Master's Degree and him with 0 debt.

Pros of working at Ford Motor

Good steady pay every week. nice easy hourly. jobs that you can access when you have more than 20yrs of working the assembly lines, great pay and benefits and bonuses

Cons of working at Ford Motor

You have to have really thick skin and you can’t be easily shaken by management or even other hourly workers, first starting out your going to be put on the worst job on the line until you put your years in then you can bid or apply for other positions within the plant that are not attached to the assembly line, working the lines for at least 15 yrs before you might be able to find another position off line

Ford Motor benefits

Full pension, health care benefits, hourly pay for employees who are legacy employees, extremely generous bonuses, if you have enough seniority there’s very rewarding job opportunities that will get you off the lines

Pros of working at Ford Motor

No comparison to any other company. They are the fool proof way. You see the first few weeks what it is to know what it's like to finally stop looking for just another job. It's differently and definitely the top and only company that can back up their company beliefs worthy of grand opportunity and valuable most of all. They are the American dream

Cons of working at Ford Motor

I don't like that I can't find anything I don't like. So it is good and true. It seems that's something I'm not familiar with. No ball to drop. No shoe to drop. Mad respect.

Ford Motor benefits

Real upheld core belief in the Ford brand, the employees life long ready and willingness to make life happen

Pros of working at Ford Motor

Working with people. I am an electrician by trade, but have been working on the UAW-Ford safety team as a Health and Safety Representative for 13 years. I love doing what I do, but I do miss working on the Electrical crew.

Cons of working at Ford Motor

As a huge corporation Ford Motor Company has been great to work for. However, I feel that there could be better employer-employee relations. We have to work together to get where we need to be.

Ford Motor benefits

Health care is so important to my family so this benefit is the most important to me. However, my favorite perk is the pricing on vehicles.

Pros of working at Ford Motor

Culture is very supportive. Everyone is eager to share their knowledge and help develop each other professionally. As individuals and as a company they want to make a quality product for their customer.

Cons of working at Ford Motor

The benefits of the culture come at a cost of bureaucracy and decision-making is general consensus-driven. Although the company is actively trying to become more even, antiquated rank structures keep people in a hierarchy that can be frustrating when you want to make a difference with your career.

Ford Motor benefits

The nature of the product is complex and keeps both the business and engineering divisions close to one another, keeping communication frequent and open. The company also emphasizes flexibility, work-from-home options, and a maternity program that has kept experts within the company that would have otherwise left.

Where did you go to school, and what did you take in high school if you can remember. Love the truck

I grew up in Youngstown and I went to Ohio State for college. As far as high school courses, I definitely took the highest level math I could as well as physics, chemistry, etc. I also did speech team (similar to debate) and I think it's great for anyone pursuing a professional career to have that experience.

How complicated is it to get all the various systems working together? e.g. The safety guy who wants the bumpers bigger compared with the body designer who wants it sleeker. I can imagine all the conflicts and systems that must work together. What procedures do you work under to help minimize and resolve these issues?

That's a very thoughtful question -- and you completely nailed the need for my role! Over the 100+ years of Ford, we have developed very robust processes and specifications to guide our designs. The big part of our jobs is integrating what could be competing needs, like you mentioned. We run many cross-functional design reviews to ensure we strike the best balance for our customers.

Jackie, I am a student in automotive engineering. I have wanted to work for Ford since I was 8 years old. What advice do you have to help me get my foot in the door as far as working for Ford once I graduate? Any inside secrets to give me an advantage over others? Thanks for the AMA!

I'm so glad to hear you're passionate about automotive engineering! My advice to you: keep your grades up, get involved in student projects like Formula SAE, and pursue internships to get some real world experience. These are all things I did when I was a student that helped me get my foot in the door at Ford. The Ford Careers site has information about internships and our Ford College Graduates program: http://corporate.ford.com/careers/careers-news-detail/careers-ford-college-graduate-programs?&ccode=US
