Duties Description The Forestry Technician 2 serves as the primary field position for the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery, carrying out a variety of essential duties to produce, maintain and distribute millions of tree and shrub seedlings annually. The Forestry Technician 2 works under the direction of a Forestry Technician 3 or a Forester 1.
Duties will include:
* Operation of various medium to heavy-duty sized equipment, including trucks, farm tractors, front end loaders and forklifts.
* Application of pesticides, chemical fertilizers and soil amendments as part of an Integrated Pest Management program to maintain and improve seedling health and soil quality.
* Assistance in the harvesting, grading and shipping of tree and shrub seedlings in support of the Nursery's annual Tree and Shrub sale and School Seedling Program.
* Participation in public outreach at fairs, conservation field days and various other educational events to promote the critical importance of tree and shrub planting in New York State.
* Perform required tasks to maintain and establish seed orchards and seed production areas, involving the use of chainsaws, pole saws, forestry mowers and various other tools and equipment.
* Collection, processing and storage of seeds and fruit for current and future propagation of conifer, hardwood and shrub seedlings in support of New York's ambitious seedling production goals.
* Supervision and training of Forestry Technician 1's, laborers and seasonal Nursery employees.
* Operation of a Geographic Information System (GIS).
* Operation and light maintenance of an extensive irrigation system in forest nursery production beds.
* Assist and oversee seedling inventory activities, and prepare reports documenting current quantities, general quality and location of seedling growing stock in nursery production beds.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Minimum qualifications for non-competitive appointment, provisional appointment, or 55 b/c appointment- An associate's or higher-level degree in forestry, forest biology, forest resource management, or forest technology, AND one year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two or more of the following areas: forest health, forest inventory, forest management, or timber sale marking including administration.

Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or
Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade or higher and either:
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the minimum qualifications above;
or
55-b/55-c Candidates - Must meet the minimum qualifications above and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.

Forestry Technician The Holden Arboretum Non-Exempt, Full-Time Opportunity: Holden Forests & Gardens seeks a Forestry Technician to support the Working Woods program across three primary focus areas: assistance to consulting foresters, land management of our 70+ acre demonstration forest, and support for education and outreach initiatives.
Consulting Forestry Support: This role will assist consulting foresters with tasks such as field surveys, mapping, site visits, report preparation, and data entry.
Land Management: The technician will conduct on-the-ground stewardship activities, including invasive species control, trail maintenance, cultivation of non-timber forest products and other demonstration site upkeep. The technician will also coordinate volunteers to help with these activities.
Education and Outreach: The technician will contribute to the delivery of public programming by supporting workshops, guided walks, classes, community tabling events, and other outreach activities.

Key Responsibilities of the Forestry Technician include but are not limited to:
Implement invasive species management through manual, mechanical, and chemical control methods
Assist with planting and establishment of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species
Maintain and improve forest trails for accessibility, safety, and demonstration purposes in the Working Woods Learning Forest
Monitor and maintain demonstration areas as needed. Tasks may include watering, weeding, planting, etc
Support seasonal land stewardship activities across varied weather conditions and terrain with staff or volunteer help
Assists with site visits, forest assessments, and forest management reports for landowners
Assist with administrative tasks relating to consulting forestry business such as writing quotes and database entry
Assist with field tours, workshops, seminars, and tabling events
Present to public and professional audiences at conferences, symposia, and workshops as needed
Collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, contractors, and partners to support Working Woods Hub and landowner goals
Participate in organizational planning and special event committees as appropriate
Work independently on diverse tasks and meets deadlines
Communicate clearly and concisely to the general public
Appreciation for the importance of the work of arboreta, public gardens, and museums
Maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable vehicle record
May provide occasional on-site support at the Cleveland Botanical Garden campus or throughout NE Ohio
Qualifications and Skills:
Demonstrate a passion for people, nature, and the environment with interest in working outdoors year-round performing manual labor in all weather conditions
Knowledge of forest conservation, forestry, and climate change action with a clear understanding of those issues and their relationships to forests, forestry, and natural resource management
Associate or bachelor's degree in forestry, forest science, natural resource management, biology or related field
2 years' experience with forestry, natural resource management or a related field, preferred
Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain certification within 1 year of hire, highly desired
Comfort with equipment such as brush cutters and chain saws or ability to become so, preferred
Experience working with landowners, preferred
Highly organized and able to coordinate multiple ongoing projects simultaneously
A good communicator who enjoys engaging with people
Knowledge of ArcGIS (Pro), GPS data loggers, and/or other database systems desired
Proficient use of Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook (email and calendar), Word, Excel, SharePoint, and OneDrive
Experience and willingness to work collaboratively as a part of a team as well as independently
Observe all safety protocols and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for positions and/or specific activities

Duties Description The DEC Division of Lands & Forests - Forest Health Program protects New Yorks diverse ecosystems from pests, diseases and invasive species. This position involves working on a wide range of forest health activities, including monitoring, survey and treatment efforts, forest stand improvement, restoration, and applied research. Some travel is required. Appropriate safety and equipment training is provided at the outset of employment. We are looking for qualified and enthusiastic individuals to join our team.
Principal Duties:
* Invasive Species Control: Implement manual and chemical control of priority invasive species; safely remove and dispose of invasive plant and flower/seed heads; conduct additional scouting near known locations and potential areas of spread; maintain detailed digital records of control activities. Pesticides will be applied under certified supervision, using backpack or hand-held sprayers as per label instructions.
* Forest and Ecosystem Health: Utilize forestry equipment for stand improvement or silvicultural experiments; collect data in established forest monitoring plots; deploy insect traps and perform visual surveys; perform site visits to diagnose tree-health issues; assist with tree planting and seed collection efforts.
* General: Utilize ESRI GIS tools for data collection; secure property owner permission for survey and control activities; provide technical information to landowners; participate in annual forest health and invasive species trainings.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology botany, land surveying and forest biology, OR one (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Preferred Qualifications:
Educational background - Completed coursework in forestry, environmental studies, ecology, natural resource management, conservation biology, or wildlife biology. Experience identifying common tree species of New York and the pests that impact them.
Invasive Species Expertise: Knowledge about invasive species, identification and control techniques.
Mapping and Field Skills: Proficient in using maps, GPS, and GIS for effective site location and recording during surveys.
Communication: Exhibits excellent interpersonal, organization and communication skills, providing accurate information about invasive species of concern to the public.
Work Ethic & Safety: Positive attitude, self-motivated ,works well both independently and in a collaborative setting, displays a strong commitment to safety practices.
Herbicide, chainsaw and wildfire experience, Prior experience is a plus. Must be NY State Certified Category 2, 3A or 9 Pesticide Technician/Applicator or able to pass pesticide exam. Required to have or ability to pass Game of Logging Levels 1 & 2 or equivalent. Encouraged to have or ability to pass Basic Wildland Firefighting Training Courses. Will be required to negotiate diverse terrains and weather conditions; including digging, cutting spraying, using a chainsaw, and hiking for extended survey periods.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
