Forsyth County company history timeline

1849

Forsyth was formed in 1849 from Stokes.

1851

In 1851 an act was passed naming the county seat Winston.

1875

In 1875 Richard J. Reynolds instituted his tobacco corporation in Winston, and it propelled the area’s economic growth for years to come.

1879

In 1879 an act was passed authorizing that Winston and Salem be combined, provided the people voted for the same.

1913

It would not be until 1913 when the town of Winston finally merged with Salem and became what it is known as today, Winston-Salem.
