Fort Hays State University was founded in 1902 as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School.
And so the move began in 1904, but not before a prairie dog town had to be removed from the land where the college's first building on that site, Picken Hall, was under construction.
The first building closer to Hays was completed in 1904, at which time the university moved to its present location.
Kansas Normal School, Hays Kansas, about 1907.
In 1914, the Western Branch of the State Normal School separated from the school in Emporia and became Fort Hays Kansas State Normal School.
The school became the Kansas State Teachers College of Hays in 1923.
During the Great Flood of 1951, Big Creek, a tributary of the Kansas River, flooded nearly all of campus, forcing a midnight evacuation.
In March 2014, it was announced that Dodge City Community College might become part of Fort Hays State University under a proposal that would create the first public four-year degree-granting college in southwest Kansas.
