When the Panic of 1893 gripped Tacoma, with bank closures and layoffs happening almost daily, a Swedish immigrant carpenter named John Fyrk drank up his final paycheck and then hung himself behind the saloon that had his money.
In 1906, the Fosses moved to 400 Dock Street, near the mouth of the waterway that would later be named for Thea Foss.
In 1907 she became the founding secretary of the group's Embla Lodge No.

Thea's story was "a picturesque tradition on the waterfront" in 1931, Raine said in an interview some years later:
