But in the 1970’s the plaza on this side of city hall, the main entrance side of city hall, was redeveloped or redesigned and the major part on this end of that redesign area is this water feature and fountain.
And what happens to the coins? You'll be happy to know that, since 2007, the money collected in the Trevi Fountain has been donated to Caritas Internationalis and other charities.
It was a close call when in 2014 superb sculptures started losing some of their parts and emergency repair was organized immediately.
Built using local Travertine stone in 1762, Trevi Fountain stands 26 feet tall and 49 feet wide, so has naturally required some renovation over the years, most recently in 2015.
It took seventeen months to complete this restoration in which the facade was cleaned, new pumps were installed and Latin inscriptions were replaced. As a result, the fountain was reopened in 2015 and is now looking even more impressive than ever.
