Fox News company history timeline

1986

Over the next seven years, the company increased broadcast hours until the network was on the air seven nights a week and gained more affiliates, making it available across the country. Its first broadcast, a late-night talk show hosted by comedian Joan Rivers, aired on October 9, 1986.

1987

In early April 1987, Fox offered its first full night of prime time shows that included an outrageous (and, to many, also hilarious) dysfunctional family, the Bundys, in a show Fox called Married . . . With Children.

By mid-1987, Joan Rivers had left the show, which was then hosted by several guest hosts before being hosted by Arsenio Hall.

By mid-1987, 113 affiliates joined the network and Fox attracted some major advertisers like Bristol-Myers, General Foods, and Johnson & Johnson.

1990

Sticking to this demographic proved a wise choice for FBC. In 1990, the company made its first profit, following the success of a prime-time animated show called The Simpsons.

1993

1993: Fox purchases rights to broadcast NFL football.

1994

May 23, 1994: Fox agreed to purchase a 20% stake in New World Communications, a television and film production company.

In 1994, News Corp. struck the deal that began Fox's ascent to major network standing.

1995

1995: Fox forms a partnership with Saban Entertainment, Inc.

1996

Fox News launched in 1996 under the leadership of Roger Ailes, a former media consultant to Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr.

1996: Fox News Channel (FNC) is founded.

1997

By 1997, the renamed Fox Kids Network enjoyed its fourth year as the top-rated children's program on broadcast television.

By 1997, cable reached 70 percent or about 65 million United States homes.

1998

Magician Andre Cole went to court in Los Angeles in late April 1998 to try to obtain a temporary restraining order to keep Fox from exposing the secret behind his patented "Table of Death" illusion.

Indeed, when CBS covered the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998, it dominated the Nielsen Media Research ratings.

News Corp. followed the renaming by selling 13.4 percent of the Fox Entertainment Group's shares in an initial public offering in 1998.

1999

By 1999, Fox Broadcasting Company was out in front of all the major networks in terms of audience growth and advertising gains.

In 1999, the company bought out half of Liberty Media's remaining holdings in Fox Sports for $1.425 billion; this allowed it to consolidate the sports and cable interests into one entity.

2000

They slowly pried the market open and after the 2000 Presidential elections, the company had seen a 440% surge in viewership.

2000: Cable networks consolidated into Fox Cable Networks.

2001

In addition, in 2001, Fox was ranked first among young adults, teens and male viewers.

By 2001 Fox Television Stations owned and operated 23 full power stations and Fox Broadcasting had 197 affiliated stations.

2002

It also added programming divisions for children (4Kids TV and Fox Kids) and a division for sports (Fox Sports), putting it on a par with the established broadcasting companies ABC, CBS, and NBC. In 2002 Fox sold its children’s divisions and the Fox Family Channel to the Walt Disney Company.

2003

A radio division, Fox News Radio, was introduced in 2003.

2004

In 2004 The X Factor, a talent competition cojudged by Cowell and coproduced by his company, Syco Productions, began airing on British TV. Two years later it won the award for best entertainment program from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

2005

In 2005 Fox launched Fox Reality Channel, which aired solely reality-based programming.

2007

Cowell also sold the format of Duets to Great Britain’s ITV. In 2007 he was executive producer of Grease Is the Word, a reality show to find the next stars for the British revival of the musical Grease.

2009

Hannity & Colmes was replaced by Hannity when Colmes left the show in 2009.

2013

When Murdoch’s conglomerate News Corporation split into separate publishing and television/film entities in 2013, Fox Broadcasting was among the companies transferred to his media holding company 21st Century Fox.

2017

In 2017 the Disney Company agreed to purchase 20th Century Fox and most other holdings of 21st Century Fox.

2019

He later created The Greatest Dancer (2019–20) for the BBC.

2020

In 2020 Disney changed the name of 20th Century Fox to 20th Century Studios.

2022
