Fox soon learned to run using an artificial leg, and by 1979 he was able to complete a marathon (26.2 miles [42 km]). A few months later he decided to run across Canada in order to raise money for cancer research.

1980

His run, which he called the Marathon of Hope, began in St John’s, Newfoundland, on April 12, 1980.

More importantly, he had set in motion the framework for an event, The Terry Fox Run, that would ignite cancer research in Canada, raising more than $850 million since 1980, and bring hope and health to millions of Canadians.

Before his death on June 28, 1981, Terry had achieved his once unimaginable goal of $1 from every Canadian.

By that time Fox had covered 3,339 miles (5,374 km) and had raised some $1.7 million (Canadian). In early 1981 the Marathon of Hope surpassed Fox’s goal of $24 million in donations.

In 1982, Canada Post issues a Terry Fox Stamp; prior to this, no other stamp had been issued until 10 years after the death of the honouree.

A 1999 national survey named Terry Fox as Canada’s greatest hero.

2000

In 2000, Terry Fox is again immortalized on a Canadian postage stamp.

A one dollar coin was issued in 2005 in honour of the 25th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope.
