Framingham State University company history timeline

1839

As the first secretary of the newly created Board of Education in Massachusetts, Horace Mann instituted school reforms that included the creation of an experimental normal school, the first one in the United States, in Lexington, in July 1839.

A second normal school was opened in September 1839 in West Barre (the school later moved to Westfield) followed by Bridgewater State College the next year.

Framingham State University was founded in 1839, and MassBay Community College has a campus in Framingham as well.

1840

In 1840, the first class of twenty-five women graduated from the Normal School.

1843

In 1843, Mary Elizabeth Miles became the first African-American student to graduate from the Normal School at Lexington.

1850

In 1850, to certify a standard of professionalism for its graduates, the School’s first printed diplomas were issued.

1853

The building was dedicated and opened on December 15, 1853.

1866

In 1866, Annie Johnson was appointed Principal, the first woman to serve as head of a Massachusetts Normal School.

1869

In 1869, Normal Hall was built as the first on-campus residence for students, administrators and faculty.

1886

In 1886, Crocker Hall opened.

1889

In 1889, May Hall was built and named after Abby Williams May, a distant cousin of author Louisa May Alcott.

1922

In 1922, the Framingham Normal School granted its first Bachelor of Science in Education degrees in conjunction with a four-year study program.

1938

May Hall provided additional classroom and laboratory space, faculty offices, a small gymnasium and a lunch room for commuter students. It was later damaged by the Hurricane of 1938 and has been renovated several times since its construction.

1945

Manufacturing has been a foundation to the Framingham economy; General Motors opened an automobile production center in 1945, and companies such as Bose and Avery-Dennison continue to play a large role in the economy.

1960

Formerly known as the Massachusetts State Teachers College, it adopted its present name in 1960.

2007

In 2007, the college began offering the Master's of Business Administration (MBA) degree.
