1923: Amid the historic Charleston Renaissance, former city mayor T.T. Hyde decided to open his own beautiful boutique hotel.
The Francis Marion Hotel opened in 1924 in the historic district, offering a “Goldilocks” location – just right, with its short walk to the charming streets and homes the city is known for, but without being in the midst of tourist overload.

1976: The hotel began to do poorly and fell into a dilapidated state.
1984: Hospitality Associates of Charleston purchased the ailing Francis Marion Hotel, although it, too, failed to thoroughly save the business.
Determined to restore the building back to its former glory, Dopp and his colleagues managed to secure a $12 million grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1996.
1996: Salvation for the Francis Marion Hotel finally arrived once hotelier P. Steven Dopp and his company, Portwood Properties, bought the ailing structure.
