Founded as Franklin Computer Corporation in 1981, the company made general purpose personal computers.
Sales peaked at $71.4 million in fiscal 1984 (ending March 31), but the company posted a $10.3 million loss that year.
Morton David joined the company in May 1984 as chairman of the board and CEO, replacing Borden, who had recently resigned.
In June 1984 Franklin filed for protection from its creditors under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Act.
In May 1986 Franklin acquired Proximity Technology, which was the nation's largest supplier of linguistic software.

By the end of 1988 it had introduced ten new products, including new and more sophisticated versions of its thesauri and dictionaries.
