1989

Looks east to Asia in 1989 with the $880 million purchase of the Flying Tiger cargo line.

1994

In 1994 the company changed its name to FedEx.

1995

Over the following decade Jobs built Pixar into a major animation studio that, among other achievements, produced the first full-length feature film to be completely computer-animated, Toy Story, in 1995.

1997

By 1997 FedEx employed 120,000 employees worldwide; delivered an average of 2.5 million packages a day in 211 countries and territories through one of its 37,000 trucks; and had made Smith one of the four hundred wealthiest people in the world.

1998

In 1998 introduces the only next-business-day express cargo service from Asia to the United States It pays off.

In 1998 FedEx formed the FDX Company, which served as a holding company that oversaw both domestic and international operations of the organization.

1999

By 1999 FedEx was shipping three million packages every day with annual sales totaling $16.7 billion.

2000

2003

In 2003 Jobs was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and the following year he underwent a major reconstructive surgery known as the Whipple operation.

In 2003 FedEx purchased Kinko's, a large office and print store chain, for $2.4 billion.

2004

Buys Kinko's for $2.4 billion in 2004 to compete with UPS' recently purchased Mail Boxes Etc.

2006

He eventually sold the studio to the Disney Company in 2006.

2009

The company barely ekes out a $98 million profit in 2009, down from $2 billion two years earlier.

2011

In August 2011 he resigned as CEO of Apple, and two months later, at age 56, he died.

2013

Posts a $1.6 billion profit on record-high sales in 2013.
