**The Opportunity**
The **Staff Interoperability Engineer** is a senior technical resource responsible for advancing interoperability initiatives within Abbott Diabetes Care while supporting our mission to improve patient outcomes and become the most connected CGM in the market. This role ensures seamless, secure, and standards‑based data exchange between medical devices, clinical systems, and external healthcare platforms while meeting regulatory, safety, and quality requirements.
The Staff Interoperability Engineer partners across engineering, product, commercial, and quality teams to influence strategy, architecture decisions, and resolve complex cross‑system challenges. The role serves as a subject matter expert in healthcare interoperability standards and plays a critical role in enabling scalable, compliant, and patient‑safe connectivity solutions that support both current products and future innovation. #software
**What You'll Do**
**Architecture & Design**
**Design scalable, secure, and standards-compliant interoperability solutions.**
+ Develop and enforce architectural best practices for clinical and administrative data exchange.
+ Facilitate and lead detailed HL7 v2, HL7 CCD/CDA and FHIR interface mapping for use case scenarios.
**Technical Execution**
+ Lead the development and deployment of APIs, data pipelines, and integration services for real-time and batch data exchange.
+ Ensure compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, 21st Century Cures Act, and other healthcare data privacy and security regulations.
+ Provide hands-on support for complex integration challenges and guide teams through technical decision-making.
+ Provide operational support for interoperability services, including participation in an on‑call rotation to diagnose, resolve, and prevent production integration issues.
**Collaboration & Enablement**
+ Partner with EHR vendors, health systems, payers, and third-party developers to ensure seamless data interoperability.
+ Support internal teams with technical and quality documentation, training, and onboarding for interoperability tools.
+ Monitor and optimize system performance, reliability, and data quality across integrations.
+ Mentor and support junior engineers through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and technical guidance.

**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
+ 10+ years of Interoperability Engineering experience
+ Proven experience in developing and deploying EHR Interoperability solutions and services at scale
+ Demonstrated working knowledge of healthcare standards and frameworks such as HL7 v2, FHIR, IHE profiles, SMART on FHIR, CDS Hooks
+ Demonstrated working knowledge of integration engines and their capabilities. (Rhapsody experience heavily preferred)
+ Extensive experience securely integrating data using multiple transport and messaging protocols such as MLLP over TCP, HTTPS, SFTP, etc.
+ Deep understanding of security concepts such as TLS/mTLS, OAuth, JWT and certificate management
+ In depth understanding of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Athena, etc.
+ Ability to understand and author product specifications, architecture, and technical design documentation
+ Ability and willingness to train and mentor junior engineers
+ Ability to work on multiple work streams concurrently
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ HL7 certified in one or more standards: V2, CDA, FHIR
+ Certification with one or more middleware platforms such as Rhapsody, Intersystems, Corepoint, Mirth, etc.
+ Experience with patient matching technologies and algorithms
+ Experience configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting high volume interfaces across environments
+ Deep understanding of clinical codesets and libraries such as SNOMED, LOINC, ICD, etc.
+ Experience deploying integration solutions on a global scale
+ Ability to research API specs, such as Swagger, to understand and evaluate API availability and data responses for current needs and future growth
+ Experience developing regulated medical device software that strictly adheres to design controls and quality management system requirements

PrincipalEngineer (Fire Protection)
. A part of Global Engineering Services (GES), Corporate Engineering exists to support Abbott's businesses and help them drive sustainable growth and margin improvement. Corporate Engineering does this by planning, designing and deploying Facilities, Utilities & Infrastructure projects with excellence, by means of strong talent, best practices, resourcefulness, and experience. The GES/CE Sr. PrincipalEngineer (Fire Protection) role significantly contributes to that mission by leading and executing engineering activities across a broad set of responsibilities as outlined below.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sr. PrincipalEngineer (Fire Protection) is an engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision, applies advanced scientific and engineering knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to complete complex assignments related to the Fire Protection Engineering discipline. A Sr. PrincipalEngineer has full knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Technical / Design: Benchmarks internally and externally. Independently executes or directs others in the design of facilities/utilities/infrastructure systems, by applying novel and proven engineering concepts and techniques. Performs detailed analysis, communicates across functions and disciplines, and serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in design reviews.
Project Management: Identifies, plans and executes projects of varying degrees of complexity within engineering specialty, requiring custom risk-managed execution plans. Works with the client and cross-functional stakeholders to establish scope, cost and schedule on multiple projects. Independently performs economic analysis and feasibility studies related to complex and often multiple competing project alternatives. Manages multiple projects, often concurrently, maintaining project controls and reporting for scope, cost and schedule. Responsible for achieving the projects' financial targets in support of business objectives.
Problem Solving / Innovation: Creates or coordinates design solutions for novel or complex problems focusing on cost-benefit, integrating regulatory needs (e.g. NFPA, Fire Code, Building Code, and Factory Mutual (FM) requirements) and operational needs (e.g. processes, materials, and people requirements). Structures studies to address cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues and arrive at optimal solutions.
Organizational Interface: Mentors others by sharing technical knowledge and providing guidance. Where appropriate, provides tasks and project assignment opportunities for employee development and evaluates performance. Represents the organization as the prime technical contact, interacting with senior management and external parties on complex technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal means including proposals, reports and design documentation. Submits articles for internal or external publication.

Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
Certifications: Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) is required.
Professional Affiliations: SFPE or NFPA membership is a plus.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in the
design and deployment of fire protection solutions across building facilities and utilities systems

Mastery of applicable codes, including NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), NEC (National Electrical Code), IFC (International Fire Code), IBC (International Building Code), and other local, national, and international regulatory requirements.
Experience with Fire Prevention/Detection/Suppression, Risk Management, and Loss Prevention.
Experience with fire protection systems including gas, water, pre-action, foam, and clean agent.
Experience with seismic bracing of fire protection systems.
Experience with underground fire mains, lead-ins, piping, and thrust blocks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sr. PrincipalEngineer (Fire Protection) is an engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision, applies advanced scientific and engineering knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to complete complex assignments related to the Fire Protection Engineering discipline. A Sr. PrincipalEngineer has full knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
+ Technical / Design: Benchmarks internally and externally. Independently executes or directs others in the design of facilities/utilities/infrastructure systems, by applying novel and proven engineering concepts and techniques. Performs detailed analysis, communicates across functions and disciplines, and serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in design reviews.
+ Project Management: Identifies, plans and executes projects of varying degrees of complexity within engineering specialty, requiring custom risk-managed execution plans. Works with the client and cross-functional stakeholders to establish scope, cost and schedule on multiple projects. Independently performs economic analysis and feasibility studies related to complex and often multiple competing project alternatives. Manages multiple projects, often concurrently, maintaining project controls and reporting for scope, cost and schedule. Responsible for achieving the projects' financial targets in support of business objectives.
+ Problem Solving / Innovation: Creates or coordinates design solutions for novel or complex problems focusing on cost-benefit, integrating regulatory needs (e.g. NFPA, Fire Code, Building Code, and Factory Mutual (FM) requirements) and operational needs (e.g. processes, materials, and people requirements). Structures studies to address cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues and arrive at optimal solutions.
+ Organizational Interface: Mentors others by sharing technical knowledge and providing guidance. Where appropriate, provides tasks and project assignment opportunities for employee development and evaluates performance. Represents the organization as the prime technical contact, interacting with senior management and external parties on complex technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal means including proposals, reports and design documentation. Submits articles for internal or external publication.
+ Compliance: Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies, procedures, and standards for Quality, Environmental, Health, Safety and Energy (EHS&E), Abbott Engineering Standards (AES), and other governance areas as applicable.
+ Additional Responsibilities May Include: Responsible for all matters pertaining the Fire Protection Engineering discipline as the global SME. Participates in internal cross-divisional teams to develop new, or revise existing, procedures and standards, and provides training. Crafts and submits Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), safety/quality checklists, executive presentations, and projects financial reports. **Required Qualifications**
+ B.S. degree in _Mechanical Engineering_ or _Fire Protection Engineering_ is required.

+ Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
+ Certifications: Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) is required.

**Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
+ **Minimum of 8 years of professional** hands-on software development experience.
+ Demonstrated experience developing, shipping, and maintaining complex mobile applications.
+ Expert-level knowledge of JavaScript, TypeScript, and React Native.
+ Hands-on experience with Swift, Kotlin, or Golang.
+ In-depth understanding of modern cross-platform mobile application design architecture, API design patterns, performance, and scalability.
+ Outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills.
+ Experience with documenting architectural and deign decisions.
+ Experience with working and supporting with multiple development team members.
**Preferred**
+ Hands-on knowledge working with event-driven architectures.
+ Familiar with Cybersecurity best practices.

What You'll Work On
Learn and improve our existing Go-based health care platforms
Design and implement services and components utilizing Go for cloud-based platforms
Developing high-volume, low-latency services for a global health care platform
Collaborate with internal and external partners to develop and integrate with APIs that empower users to share and utilize their medical data in partner systems
Design and implement unit testable code that is highly maintainable
Collaborate directly with InfoSec to design and implement secure solutions
Collaborate with both internal and external team members to to shape and define API contracts
Provide new ideas and insight in collaboration with the data services team
Ensure performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful design.
Contribute to significant architectural and operational decisions in collaboration with the Architecture team
Build out internal tooling and APIs to make business and engineering processes easier, faster, and safer.
Implement systemic changes to align existing systems with current architectural goals
Create diagrams, flowcharts and models that illustrate the internal design and workflow of solution components

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, other relevant field or equivalent experience.
5-7+ years experience.
Familiarity with data design and database technologies such as SQL Server, Postgres or similar.
Software development experience with Go. Strong knowledge of idiomatic Go and best practices. Good knowledge of concurrency in Go - goroutines, channel patterns, Go ecosystem, and tools and frameworks.
Experience contributing to a scalable architecture/design of existing and new systems that are highly available and easy to maintain and monitor
Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining highly complex asynchronous messaging and backend processing jobs
Practical experience and understanding of working with and developing RESTful APIs and microservices
Ability to work well with a team in a high-performance organization
Comfortable working asynchronously with a distributed team
Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills
A willingness to learn new software development languages to meet goals and objectives
Strong Computer Science fundamentals and experience with software development
Eagerness to contribute beyond experience level
