FTE: 0.900000 Standard Hours: 36.00 Shift: Shift 1 Shift Details: Holidays: Weekends: The Surgical Technologist handles instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. He/she will perform other related duties as needed to maintain department cost containment, efficiency, as well as quality performance.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:
A minimum of 1 year of work experience as a Surgical Technologist is required. Is competent in role as a Surgical Technologist and displays advanced knowledge and ability to independently perform roles and tasks related to the field of surgical technology. Anticipates surgeons' needs and is acknowledged by staff as advanced in field. Ability to first assist is preferred.
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Post high school education, certification or diploma required. Completion of a Surgical Technologist program, completion of Military Operating Room Specialist course or the Froedtert Health sponsored apprentice II program required.
LICENSURE DESCRIPTION:
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. Certification as a Surgical Technologist is highly preferred.

* Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
* Scrubs, gowns, and gloves
* Opens sterile supplies and sets up sterile table with instruments, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure

* Keeps accurate records throughout the procedure and communicates them to circulator
* Properly cares for specimens

Position Summary:
The SurgicalTechnician position prepares the operating room, including setting up the sterile field and setting up surgical equipment, supplies, and solutions. During surgery, this role passes instruments, fluids, and supplies to the surgeon and prepares and manages surgical equipment, the sterile field, and specimens.
Position Responsibilities:
Maintain a clean and sterile surgical environment, provide the surgeon with appropriate instrumentation and equipment, and assist the surgeon during procedures.
Prepare the operating room for surgery.
Keep records of use of Steam Sterilizer.
Perform initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
Keep the suture carts organized and watch expiration dates.
Turn over rooms in between cases.
Assist the team members with gowning and gloving.
Assist with patient positioning pre-operative and transport patient from cart to bed and back.
Stock adequate supplies for surgery.
Perform other duties as requested.
Position Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

* Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
* Scrubs, gowns, and gloves
* Opens sterile supplies and sets up sterile table with instruments, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
* Anticipates additional supplies needed during the procedure
* Keeps accurate records throughout the procedure and communicates them to circulator
* Properly cares for specimens
* Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
* Sponges or suctions operative site
* Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders
* Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon
* Connects drains to suction apparatus
* Prepares and applies sterile dressing
* Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
* Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants
* Helps in draping sterile field
* Passes instruments to surgeon during procedure
* Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
* Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
* Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room
* Assists in prepping room for the next patient
* Regular and prompt work-site attendance
* Performs other duties as they are assigned
Qualifications, Knowledge & Ability:
* Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
* Degree from an accredited school is required
* Previous Neuro experience as a Surgical Technologist in a hospital environment is required
* BLS certification is required upon hire
* Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own professional advancement
* Is aware of professional standards and performs in accordance with them
* Ability to relate and work effectively with others
* Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards

This person prepares instruments, stocks the operating room, and monitors equipment before, during and after surgery.
