Funeral Attendant Careers

Although being a funeral attendant may seem to be a very somber job, it can also be very fulfilling. As a funeral attendant, you'll help families deal with making appropriate arrangements to honor the death of a loved one. The main function of these attendants is to handle all aspects of preparing a facility for a funeral so that the service proceeds smoothly.

These attendants perform a variety of tasks to assist with the funeral, such as transporting the deceased to the funeral home, placing the casket in the parlor, organizing flower arrangements and lighting, closing and preparing the casket for burial, and cleaning the funeral equipment.

This entry-level position doesn't require any formal education. However, if you're thinking of doing this type of work, you'll need to have excellent customer service skills and be able to display authentic sincerity. Since you'll be working closely with people who are going through the grieving process, you'll need to understand how to properly assist them with their funeral planning needs.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being a funeral attendant. For example, did you know that they make an average of $11.1 an hour? That's $23,078 a year!

What Does a Funeral Attendant Do

There are certain skills that many funeral attendants have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. When it comes to the most important skills required to be a funeral attendant, we found that a lot of resumes listed 54.9% of funeral attendants included customer service, while 12.5% of resumes included funeral homes, and 9.5% of resumes included on-call. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

Instead, it might be more helpful to search by industry, as you might be missing jobs that you never thought about in industries that you didn't even think offered positions related to the funeral attendant job title. But what industry to start with? Most funeral attendants actually find jobs in the health care and hospitality industries.

How To Become a Funeral Attendant

If you're interested in becoming a funeral attendant, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 29.6% of funeral attendants have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 3.5% of funeral attendants have master's degrees. Even though some funeral attendants have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a funeral attendant. When we researched the most common majors for a funeral attendant, we found that they most commonly earn bachelor's degree degrees or associate degree degrees. Other degrees that we often see on funeral attendant resumes include high school diploma degrees or diploma degrees.

You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a funeral attendant. In fact, many funeral attendant jobs require experience in a role such as cashier. Meanwhile, many funeral attendants also have previous career experience in roles such as sales associate or customer service representative.
