The 1996 Lyon summit addressed development in general, focusing on better access to trade and private direct investment and on debt relief for highly indebted poor countries.
He was invited to the next two summits (Munich 1992 and Tokyo 1993) to discuss with the G7 leaders how they could help Russia economically. Thus President Yeltsin has been coming to these summits for longer than any leader except Kohl, though he was not there at Lyon in 1996 because of the Russian presidential elections.
In 1997 the process is completed by making Denver the ‘summit of the eight', with Yeltsin present from the very beginning.
April-June 1998 - With the yen weakening, the BOJ intervenes to support its currency.
So Clinton has supported the idea of Tony Blair, the new British prime minister, to have the 1998 summit, at Birmingham in the UK, address growth, employability and inclusion.
In response to an expanding portfolio, the G7 began to incorporate ministerial meetings into its structures; foreign ministers, finance ministers, and central bank governors have been convening concurrent discussions at the summit since 1998.
In 1998, Russia was formally admitted to the group, making it the G8.
September 2001 - The BOJ on its own and with ECB, euro zone central banks and New York Fed, intervenes to sell yen for dollars, worrying about an export-crippling rise in the value of the yen following the 9/11 attacks.
November 2008 - The first G20 leaders summit takes place in Washington under the banner “Financial Markets and the World Economy”.

September 2010 - Japan intervenes for the first time in six years after the United States dollar hits a 15-year-low of 82.87 yen.
March-October 2011 - G7 nations jointly intervene in March to stem yen strength when the currency spikes against the dollar after a massive earthquake in Japan.
In 2013, world leaders tackled the developing Syrian crisis (unsuccessfully), while more recent meetings have covered topics like North Korean nuclear armament, environmental issues, Brexit implications, and the rise and fall of ISIS.
Following the Russian annexation of Crimea, the G7 nations decided in March 2014 to meet without Russia until further notice.
Rather than meeting in Sochi, the G7 member states met for the first time in 16 years on 4 and 5 June 2014 in Brussels.
The Global Apollo Program, for instance, was launched out of the 2015 summit meeting.
