Gail Borden Public Library company history timeline

1892

By 1892, the citizens of Elgin were desperately seeking a building for the library which had barely survived for years in rented rooms in the downtown area.

2003

• Main Library opened in October 2003 - 153,826 sq ft

2006

The American Library Association (ALA) recently announced that the Gail Borden Public Library District of Elgin, Ill. is the 2006 winner of the Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award for its project "GIANTS: African Dinosaurs, created by Project Exploration" exhibit.

2008

In December 2008, Iwo Jima veteran Gordon Schnulle opened a large cardboard carton that arrived at his Elgin residence.

2009

• Rakow Branch opened in August 2009 - 10,598 sq ft.

Washington, DC—The Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS) has selected five museums and five libraries to receive the 2009 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

In recognition of a marketing campaign that put a new library card in the hands of more than 8,000 U-46 students, the Gail Borden Public Library (www.gailborden.info) in Elgin has been named the recipient of the 2009 Marketing Award from the North Suburban Library System.

2010

• Recipient of the 2010 Elgin Hispanic Network Organization of the Year

2013

Carole Medal, Executive Director of the Gail Borden Public library in Elgin Illinois, is the recipient of the 2013 Illinois Library Association Librarian of the Year Award.

2016

• South Elgin Branch opened in July 2016 - 4,275 sq ft.

2021
