Garden Center Services was established in 1956 as a grassroots effort to support children with developmental disabilities and their families.
In 1966, because of the Valk’s hard work, Mr.
In 1967, the Valk family constructed a new location on Industry Drive.
In 1973, Eddie Anderson and his wife Sara purchased the garden center.
In 1974, the board of directors appointed Don L. Rogers the new president.
McDonald expanded into the Virginia Beach market with a second location on Independence Boulevard in 1980.
Adding to the uniqueness of Dan West Garden Center, in 1983, the Christmas Shop located in the old Seed and Feed building held its grand opening.
In the summer of 1983, Evergreen purchased land in Johnson City and Evergreen of Johnson City was formed.
In 1989, Evergreen purchased a small garden center in Colonial Heights to service the area due to increased competition and consumer demand.
In 1990, Evergreen moved many of the greenhouse production responsibilities to another site located near the parent location on 1401 Riverport Road.
In 1994, Evergreen Home and Garden Showplace joined a group of 500 premier garden centers from across the nation with TruServ/H&G Showplace.
In 1995, Evergreen Home and Garden Showplace helped form a group of garden centers from Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, known as the TAG Garden group.
In 1996, Evergreen Home and Garden Showplace were again selected among its peers as the Tennessee Nursery and Landscape Association Home and Garden Center of the Year.
Along with the numerous landscape awards for our creative installation, Evergreen Home and Garden Showplace garnered the Business Journal’s “Tri-City Business Awards” in 1997.
Even so, sales still topped the 1997 levels.
The business should be open for business by spring of 1997.
In fact, when most nurseries experienced a flat growth rate in 1998, Wonderland Nursery experienced a 25% growth in sales.
According to the Nursery Retailer , lawn and garden sales nationwide are expected to top $83 billion in 1999.
In 2001, a brand new facility opened to serve the expanding Shelby/Fayette county area and serves as a “warehouse” to refill the Poplar facility daily with the widest selection of new and “tried and true” plant varieties.
King County is predicted to become the largest county in the state by the year 2003.
Many experts predict Spokane, Washington, will become the second fastest growing city in the state between now and the year 2007.
In spring 2009, McDonald unveiled the first Garden Market in Poquoson, Virginia.
The Great Neck Virginia Beach location opened its doors in the fall of 2017 and offers the same high-quality products and services as our location on Independence Boulevard.
In September of 2018, The Green People moved our staff, products, and gardening secrets the more Colonial Heights location.
In 2022, in preparation for Henere and Lee Valk to retire and the next generation to continue the family legacy, the youngest brother Michael Valk purchased the Colonial Heights location with his daughters, Jessica and Sarah.
