Here Garden continued to grow, adding grades and then, in the spring of 1929, graduating its first high school class of three students! Within a few years Garden Country Day School became an independent school, with a board of trustees, under the New York State guidelines for not-for-profit schools.
The gardens’ civic importance was acknowledged by the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland (CLEVELAND BOTANICAL GARDEN) that in 1936 began to award the annual prizes to the winning gardeners and gardens in Cleveland and surrounding suburbs.
Garden International School has come a long way since being founded in 1951 as one of the first British international schools in Malaysia.
As the school expanded, so did its site, with the Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary students spanning 3 campuses in 1973.
And in 1978, the school board, under great financial pressure created by the court-mandated order to desegregate its schools, cut school gardens from its budget.
The cross-town busing of students starting in 1979 would have disrupted the program anyway.
The new International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) was introduced in 1998, replacing the University of London GCE ‘O’ Levels.
The Sixth Form was launched, offering Cambridge ‘A’ Level from September 2000.
GIS becomes the only school in Malaysia to receive the Global Innovation Award 2016, recognising exemplary values and best practice in teaching and learning in 21st Century schools.
The Washington Park Horticultural Center survived; in 2021, it was administered from East Technical High School.
