These are A Tasteful Place, a fruit, herb and vegetable teaching garden and The Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, an 8-acre outdoor science museum teaching life and earth science principles in an engaging way. The garden has a budget of $22 million, average visitation of over a million guests a year and a membership base of over 45,000.

Perform various general landscape maintenance and labor duties in the gardens under the supervision of a Crew Leader or Horticulturist supervisor. Physically perform garden labor, including operation of loud equipment and transporting work materials/equipment in all weather conditions. Contribute to team effort. This position is for 40 hours a week, 6:30 am – 3:30 pm Monday through Friday, with rotating weekend shifts and some holiday shifts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
• Perform routine maintenance with limited supervision of garden area according to set standards, including mowing, weeding, trimming, planting, raking, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, etc.
• Safely operate and be responsible for routine maintenance of landscape maintenance equipment i.e. push mowers, backpack blowers, rototiller, tractor, edgers, gas hedge shears, utility truck, etc.
• Apply pesticides and chemicals using appropriate safety equipment as provided and according to departmental policies and procedures.
• Monitor irrigation system and pump systems (where applicable) and report malfunctions.
• Assist with special projects as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Basic communication skills, bilingual a plus.
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs; repetitively bend/stoop, move across property and work in all weather conditions and follow approved safety guidelines
• Driver’s license required to operate garden vehicles if necessary.
• One year experience desirable.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Under the direction of the Wellness Program Manager, this position is responsible for promoting gardening throughout the Catawba Nation community. This position will assist with planning and implementation of the new community and tribal program gardens on the Reservation. As well as assisting maintenance of existing tribal program gardens and community gardens, helping off-site individual raised bed garden boxes within a 20-mile radius of the old Catawba Reservation. They will also pickup and delivery produce generated from program and community gardens when needed.

MAJOR DUTIES

Oversee all gardening aspects of the tribe’s Wellness program in coordination with the Food Sovereignty Coordinator; these activities may include but are not limited to procuring seeds and seedlings, planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and garden box repair

Conduct community outreach about the benefits and methods of gardening

Coordinate with community partners and other divisions to implement, maintain, and oversee existing community gardens

Work with divisions, programs, and community partners to support their individual garden boxes, provide gardening education, and support community planting events

Transport produce in coordination with the Wellness food distribution plan

Provide support when needed to community partners in all efforts related to gardening, animal husbandry, and food production or distribution; these activities may include but are not limited to cleaning chicken coops, feeding and watering livestock, planting, weeding, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, and repairing necessary food production items like garden boxes, fences, etc

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

1 years’ experience with gardening, certification preferred.

Ability to work outside in the elements including but not limited to heat, cold, and rain

Possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable on the tribe’s vehicle policy.

Ability to stand, walk, twist, turn, bend, crouch, push, and pull for extended periods

Effective communication skills; Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and to always maintain a courteous and professional demeanor with the public.

Excellent organizational skills

Ability to attend trainings and classes as required.

Ability to work evenings or weekends as required
