Job Description About the Role Reports to the Assistant to the Curator (RG) and Head Gardener Herb Garden performing duties to maintain Herb Garden areas. This is a limited-term role, currently budgeted for two years. The role is part-time, scheduled for 24 hours per week. S/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach. Essential Duties Daily Maintenance: weeding, watering, edging, grooming, and removal of debris, and minor adjustments in irrigation. Plant Care: Pruning, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, and weed control under supervision. Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety protocols when using tools and chemicals. Will be asked to perform duties in other areas of the public gardens at the Huntington as needed. Answer visitor questions and occasionally participate in garden programming as a Huntington ambassador. Adheres to written safety policy, follows all precautions and directions in use of equipment and chemicals. May perform other related duties as assigned. Candidate Requirements and Experience Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of grounds maintenance, such as general cultivation requirements of plants preferable as well as basic pruning and planting skills; must be able to perform weed and pest control; basic irrigation knowledge preferable. Detail oriented, selective pruning experience preferable. Good physical condition in order to stoop, bend, walk long distances, and lift moderate (and occasionally heavy) loads. Competent in the proper use of hand tools, blowers, edgers and other powered equipment as required. Working Conditions Works outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to lift 50lbs on a regular basis. Garden work will require awareness and avoidance of potential hazards inherent in a public garden. Appropriate attire for the tasks assigned may include long pants and sleeves, close-toed, sturdy shoes and hat. Gloves and tools will be provided.
