With origins in the rural Duck Creek School, the first school in Garland opened soon after the community's establishment in 1887.
The first classes began in September 1901 in the Garland College building with an enrollment of 130 students.
In 1901, Garland voters elected to incorporate as an independent school district, which gave them authority to levy taxes for school improvements.
In its first 100 years, public education in Garland grew from a six-room building with enrollment of 130 pupils in 1901 to more than 60 campuses with an enrollment of approximately 51,000 students.
Garland High School was founded in 1902, and was established in the former Garland College.
Around 1912 the building was expanded and renovated.
Garland ISD opened its first school for African- American children in 1922-23.
The 3 story building was replaced with a two story, which had Grammar School on the first floor while high school classes occupied the second until the Garland High School campus was completed in 1936.
South Garland was established in 1964 and became the second high school to serve the Garland community.
When the school first opened in 1971, the principal allowed the students to vote on what type of Raider Sam they wanted.
The first graduating class was the Class of 1973.
Early in its history, on August 11, 1974, a North Garland gymnast won the city of Garland's first national high school title.
Naaman Forest dropped a lower grade and added a higher grade until it attained senior high school status in 1992. It opened in 1988 with grades 6 - 9.
