Founded in 1960 by Herbert H. Peyton, GATE Petroleum Company is a heavily diversified company headquartered in Jacksonville, FL. GATE operates in a variety of industries including retail convenience stores, car washes, fleet and fuel services, real estate, hospitality, and construction materials.
1964: Established first corporate office at 9540 San Jose Blvd.
T. Mitchell Rhodes, who joined Gate in 1966 as a service station attendant, will become chief operating officer.
1970-80s: Expanded convenience stores into Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Virginia and Louisiana.
1978: Developed Southpoint, a 410-acre mixed-use office center.
1978: Gate Roofing Manufacturing became largest producer of saturated felt in Southeast.
But Peyton's biggest move came in 1983 when he bought the real estate assets of Stockton, Whatley & Davin.
Also in 1984, he bought Epping Forest, a 52-acre riverfront property on San Jose Boulevard.
1985: Became title sponsor of Gate River Run USA 15K Championship race.
Since its opening in 1989, The Lodge & Club has offered ultimate luxury, sophistication, and impeccable standards of hospitality in an enclave of relaxation.
1990: Acquired 28 7-Eleven stores in the Jacksonville market.
GATE became the title sponsor in 1993, a partnership that continues today.
In 1994, when asked whether he'd run for mayor, Peyton told the Times-Union:
2004: Acquired and renovated The River Club.
2005: Master-planned and developed The Shoppes at Bartram Walk and Kendall Town Center.
2006: Acquired in-Motion Entertainment, an airport entertainment and electronics retailer.
